AutoCAD Stacked and Baseline Dimensions

Help ButtonThe Autodesk product teams receive several emails from the Autodesk Product Feedback Form. The Product Feedback form is the one that I had mentioned in the a recent post: Send Your Feedback or BBQ Recipe to an Autodesk Product Team. Your feedback goes to the products teams and they read them. In many cases team members respond if there is enough detail and time permitting as they can’t respond to every feedback submission and are not product support but do try to help.

The AutoCAD QA Team wanted to address a couple of the common feedback form reported issues they have received in a few blog posts. This post on Stacked and Baseline Dimensions is by AutoCAD Test Development extraordinaire Chris Miller.

How do I create Stacked Dimensions?

There are a number of do this, depending on what you mean by “stacked dimensions.”

If you create a dimension, double-click it (or enter DDEDIT then select it) to edit the text, you can add a 2nd line of text below the dimension value by entering \X and then the string you want to add, or just move the cursor to the end of the text and hit Enter on the keyboard to enter a 2nd line of text.

Or...you can stack alternate units below the value so the dimension shows values in two different units (say Inches and mm). This is done in the DIMSTYLE dialog > Modify > Alternate units tab.

If what you're looking for is Baseline Dimensions:

Baseline Dimension

In that case you want to use the DIMBASELINE command (Annotate Ribbon tab > Dimensions panel > 4th button is Continued and Baseline) and you can adjust the spacing between the dimensions using DIMSTYLE > Modify > Lines tab > Baseline setting.

Thank you Chris!

Don’t forget if you have feedback, to offer up a family BBQ recipe or even a good beer or wine suggestion. http://autode.sk/feedback
