A few years ago I posted AutoCAD Free Bonus Tool Drawing Tabs "MDITabs" which when loaded in AutoCAD 2010-2012 provided a horizontal drawing tab for each open drawing file. This AutoCAD Bonus Tool was very popular among AutoCAD users working with multiple drawings open. Now with the launch of the new AutoCAD 2013 and the new Autodesk Exchange App Store there is a new version of the Drawing Tabs app compatible with AutoCAD 2013, and yes it is still FREE.
Randy Young is an Lead Engineer for Autodesk Hardware Certification and today he sent me some great information on the new Autodesk Recommended Hardware website. In the past we have provided test results and guidance on graphics cards or recommended system level requirements such as memory and CPU but never really to the model and manufacture of a computer system but that is changing.
The AutoCAD 2013 products for both Windows and Mac have been announced and now available as a free full version 30 day trial download, free to students on the Student Community and to Autodesk Subscription customers. There are many people wanting to test and kick the tires of the new release of AutoCAD so the downloads might be quite busy initially.
Today is the big day. Starting at 9am PST today you can join Autodesk’s Carl Bass, Amar Hanspal, Mark Petit, and Brian Mathews for the exiting news about the new products and suites for design engineering & entertainment http://t.co/ckQCrUcL You can also follow the event on Twitter with hashtag #ADSK_SF2012. I will be in the San Francisco Autodesk Gallery during this live event and the presentations to the press, bloggers and media following. It it was truly a delight to...
Autodesk and Gian Pablo Villamil “GP” have now published the 123D Catch Camera Rig design as an Instructable and on Thingiverse. This Do It Yourself camera rig can used for capturing objects in 3D by mounting your digital camera and then rotating the camera around the object you wish to capture in 3D. You then use 123D Catch to upload and process the photos to a resulting 3D textured mesh. The 123D Catch Camera Rig design by GP was created to be low cost with parts from almost any hardware store and several of the components provided as STL files ready to be 3D printed.
I am in New York City for a Autodesk 123D maker and personal fabrication special media event. Autodesk CEO, Carl Bass along with Samir Hanna, VP of Consumer Products hosting the event. I also have some Maker related meetings with the fine folks at Shapeways and a special visit to the MakerBot Botcave.
The system requirements for AutoCAD 2013 are pretty much the same as the last two releases with the exception of no longer officially support for Windows Vista. If you are using AutoCAD 2012 or AutoCAD 2011 on Windows XP or Windows 7 just fine, you should be good to go with AutoCAD 2013. Remember system requirements are not a one size fits all as there are a number of factors that affect how much resources your system may require. The factors can be from the complexity of your drawings, 2D or 3D, visual styles. These requirements are also the lowest suggested system optimal requirements, so use it as a suggested baseline.
This past Thursday, Friday, and Saturday several high school student teams from around the Western United States converged on Salt Lake City and competed in the Utah's FIRST Robotics Competition regional competition. Each team started designing in January for the Rebound Rumble challenge which involved several challenges where the robots must autonomously make some basketball baskets shots and then the wireless controlled manual portion gathering the balls and shooting them for points as well as some obstacles and cooperation challenges where one robot helps another over an obstacle. In between the events there is fun trivia and entertainment like music and dancing to keep the crowds energy going.
The new iPad known as the iPad (3rd generation) is now available for those that pre-ordered or waited in some sort of a line. So I found myself in a line at a Walmart at midnight and got my iPad 3rd gen tablet in the 32 Gb Wifi flavor. I don’t like waiting in lines for things especially gadgets but this was worth it and actually a fun experience making new friends in the line and then the creepy guy wearing a poor Halo Master Chief costume around the store. It was almost like a support group for iPad users “My name is Shaan and I am an iPad’aholic.”
There have been many Pixlr updates recently and an added surprise for me personally after a photo effect was named for me in Pixlr-o-matic web and mobile products. Autodesk acquired Pixlr July 2011 and they have a few online and mobile image editing solutions. There is the online powerful Pixlr Editor and then the Pixlr-o-matic online and mobile that allows creative and retro treatments of photos.
In the spirit of the 3.14 date being the same as the number of the mathematical constant of Pi I thought I would add my own spin of warped humor along with some cool 3D technology. All day I have been hearing about pies key lime pie, blueberry pie, cherry pie, pot pie, meat pie, banana cream pie, and apple pies which has done nothing but make me hungry. But how about a cow pie?

Project Falcon is a free technology preview on Autodesk Labs. Project Falcon standalone version allows you to import a STL file and subject it to digital wind tunnel simulation testing to better understand the structure, topology, or a design and improve it. Most Autodesk and applications that work with 3D geometry can export a STL mesh file to be used in Project Falcon.
