Jay Leno's Green Garage

See Jay Leno's solar and wind system for his car garage in the embedded video below or at www.jaylenosgarage.com. I got the rare opportunity to visit with Jay and his team a couple weeks ago in his secret car collection buildings and it was unbelievable to say the least.

I recently provided some AutoCAD 2009 upgrade training to Jay's team who use Autodesk products like AutoCAD and even Autosketch in the designing one off replacement parts for Jay's world class car collection when Jay breaks them. I got to reverse engineer a Model T Ford bearing cap in 3D while there. I met some of the worlds most experienced and knowledgeable engineers, car lovers, and top notch fabricators in his shop. This is also where I met the legendary Eddie Paul who is a legend in metal fabrication and designing cars for the movies, mechanical sharks, new types of motors and just about everything else using AutoCAD 2009 and 3ds Max and soon Autodesk Inventor.

Jay Leno's Hydrogen Fuel Cell SUV GM YukonI even got a slick ride back to my hotel in Jay's hydrogen cell powered GM SUV which runs on hydrogen. I would love to have a hydrogen powered vehicle but with only 40 of them made so far they run about 1 million dollars so the price needs to come down to an affordable level.
One funny thing I found out is Jay is a happy mouse clicker on a computer "click" "click" "click" "click" when only one click was needed. He is a very down to earth guy off camera and like myself he does not sleep much and is always going.

Leaping off on a Walkabout Photo Trek

Ponderosa PointI took off yesterday headed for Southern Utah's Bryce Canyon, Escalante, Paria and other places to unwind, relax, and take photos. I am posting this via a connection of my Blackberry as a modem. I will be off the grid for the most part for the next few days except to upload photos to my Flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/. Today I am hiking Death Hollow Slot which sounds ominous but is spectacular in the colors and the snow.

My GPS tracks and photo locations. I geotag all my photos using a GPS device.

In San Francisco, Woohoo Autodesk World Press Day!

2008_02_11_55902008_02_11_5609I am staying on Nob Hill. I feel a wee bit out of place as the hotels up here are top notch class. The only complaint is my room is next to the convergence of several cable car lines so I am hearing the constant cable whir and then the cable cars coming up and down the hill "ding ding". Luckily they don't run all night especially with the group that went by not too long ago as that seemed to be the party cable car with hooting and hollering "Woohoo here we expletive go,  hold on". I guess it is a small price to pay for the absolute stunning view of the city and a direct view of the Transamerica building.

So why am I here, well I am here with press/journalist, and Autodesk employees from all corners of the world for the Autodesk World Press Day tomorrow. There should be some exciting things shown and I will try to provide links on this blog as well as my own impressions and experience.

The weather is unseasonable and nice and clear. Ah nice and fitting.

Cheers,
Shaan

Traveling Today to San Francisco

I have a super busy day today culminating with a flight to San Francisco for an event tomorrow.

I spent yesterday hiking in the local canyons and seen moose, deer, elk, and rocky mountain sheep. I spent an hour watching some local paragliders soaring in the cold air around Lehi Utah.

Lookout Seattle Washington, here I come again for AUGI CAD Camp 2008

AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2006AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2007AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2008You cant say you were not warned first. ;-)
This will be my 3rd year presenting at the Seattle AUGI CAD Camp. Seattle CAD Camp will be February 21st, 2008. I am planning something special (not Irish riverdancing) since this is also the week of my birthday and I also want to be invited again in 2009. What can I say, I love Seattle, good coffee, good seafood, AUGI, and of course the local Autodesk user group PSAUG. The bonus is I won't get lost finding the location and have to call Alex, Jamie, or Crystal (that is if it is once again at the Renton Community College). I am hoping (hint hint Jamie Thomas) PSAUG will be holding a meeting around the date so I can attend and chat with the group. I have lived all over and still I call the Northwest home, even though I don't live there anymore. People in the Northwest don't tan, they rust, ok sorry for the old and poor rain joke.

AUGI Seattle CAD Camp 2007

I just uploaded some pictures from last years event as they were on my old photo gallery and I had just not moved them over to my Flickr gallery. I also found a photo of Robert Bell at Pikes Market on the big brass pig in the image search. Sorry Robert...

…and you should see my CAD designs”

Shaan Hurley and Matt MurphyPerhaps I will bring along the infamous AU 2007 Matt Murphy Clay Head Sculpture if I can sneak it on the plane. Many Seattle AU 2007 PSAUG attendees were fond of the Matt Head and Crystal won the grand prize Apple iTouch with her own clay sculpture.

Fellow backpackers, photographers, and wind driven travelers, Africa?

image      I am looking to mark off the last continent (ex. Antarctica) that I have not visited Africa and wanted to see if anyone is interested. I am looking at doing the off the beaten path travel as I usually do and that means getting local and seeing places most do not. I am looking into Eastern Africa such as Tanzania and Zanzibar, Kenya, or any places others may suggest perhaps Madagascar to see the unique wildlife like the Lemurs and Chameleons. I want to carry just a backpack with supplies for hiking, photography, and the bare essentials. This will not be an expensive trip as I plan on using my airline miles for flights, and staying at local spots which are around $20 a night and a few camp nights on trails. I would love to see some up close wildlife encounters, snakes <g>, ants, the savannah as well as forests and rural areas. I am looking at February, March or April as that would be just before the rainy season as I understand it. Also of interest is early March is the timing for the worlds greatest migration which is the migration of wildebeests across the Serengeti plains and some river crossings where crocodiles await to greet them with wide open jaws.

I would also offer my technical skills in trade for places to stay and local assistance if anyone is local in Africa. I could train people on Autodesk products, engineering, and my humor of course. I would also be willing to work mapping by GPS or doing other things local for the experience and getting to know people and the region. It is always nice to do something good in places where you travel. I have been trying to find a Tanzania guide that would be willing to allow me to work helping them map with GPS, photograph, update or create website and document their safaris in return for just basic food and lodging. Any sponsors for a live blogs and geotagged photo gallery during the trip or want someone to field test equipment? I blogged from deep in the Brazilian Amazon with a HP TabletPC in a rugged case on a GSM modem a few years back.

So, is anyone adventurous and dare to consider to join my African Safari? Could be the trip of a lifetime and fun as I tend to end up in strange places and meet all sorts of people as I do not like the typical tourism busses and drive by points of interest. I also have a knack for getting those odd travel stories that make you shake your head and laugh, but isn't that what it is about? Places and rural cultures and wilderness are changing or disappearing with every click of the clock, so see it while you can or live through people photographs and books.

I am also looking at a return to Brazil and Costa Rica this year.

Just email me or post a reply to this blog post if interested or have any tips on Africa travel and places.

    Cheers and Happy Travels!

    Back in Utah

I have been from Brasil to New York to Utah this week ranging from 30C and sunny summer to -5C and over a foot of snow. Luckily my flight out of New York at JFK airport made it out just before the snow hit there and canceled many flights. I was supposed to be in Peru near the headwaters of the Amazon today but I had a sick relative that warranted my early return. It has been a crazy past 3+ weeks of travel, AU 2007, hiking, Brasil CAD Camp, work, and will take some time to recover.

imageI have began tracking my flights on a Garmin trex Venture HC GPS device. It is so cool to know when your plane at the given speed and heading should arrive at the destination. It also answers the age old questions of mine of what city is that down there below me or mountain or lake. With my GPS I know exactly where I am at and what city, lake or mountain that is. I can even import my tracks into Google Earth Pro on my laptop to monitor the trip or keep records of travels.

i get it, it = email spam

    Did you get it too?
spam I received an unsolicited sales advertisement for a service for a product I do not even use. I suspect they got my email from some CAD/Design related email database or harvested it from the web. It is unfortunate when some that have no relationship with me or not even known to me decide that some unsolicited email would tempt me to purchase their products when in reality it makes me alert to never look into their product or service. Spam is bad business, so is ads placed in RSS feeds, or blogs without a real purpose or person like the one that does nothing but schedule regular posts and a RSS of their Help manual content piece by piece bravo great idea <NOT>.

OK back to my regular work and waiting for my flight to New York tonight from Brasil, then Utah tomorrow.

    Ciao,
    Shaan

Shaan is Traveling Today and Tomorrow

I had to cut my trip in warm Brasil short due to a family member emergency so tonight I fly from São Paulo Brasil to New York City JFK airport where I have a nice and painfully long 7 hour layover before flying to Utah and getting back into the deep cold snow.

    São Paulo Brasil CAD Camp

I had a great time yesterday attending and presenting at the São Paulo CAD Camp. AUGI Brasil did a great job as did the host and the Universidade São Judas. I saw so many people that I had known only by email in attendance as well as good Brazilian friends. Some came from as far as Curitiba Brasil by bus to attend and said it was well worth it. I heard from some in attendance that the instructors were top notch. It was also a treat to see my Autodesk 25 years history article translated in the Portuguese AUGIWorld Magazine.

Later in the evening I went to a dinner with instructors and AUGI Brasil hosted by Herbert Ortiz the AUGI Brazil Country Chapter Coordinator and also of OFCDesk LLC at a São Paulo pizza restaurant which was excellent. São Paulo is well known for its pizza. I will post more once I catch up on email and relocate to another part of São Paulo today. This city is HUGE and the heavy rain currently makes getting anywhere a difficult and long task. I have uploaded a few photos from CAD Camp in my Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/.

Shaan is in São Paulo Brasil

I made it to Brazil (Brasil) this morning and am now getting situated and ready for CAD Camp this week in the worlds 3rd largest city. If you are in São Paulo and would like to meet please email me at shaan@autodesk.com but I will only be here for a few days. It is nice coming from the cold winter snow of Utah to the summer warmth of Brazil.  I will be posting photos during the trip and CAD Camp to my Flickr photo site http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/.

I am still recovering from the overall excellent experience of Autodesk University 2007 which was the largest and best AU so far.

Made it Home, Now off to South America

I made it back to Utah and am now packing for travel to Brazil tomorrow. The drive yesterday took twice as long as I hit heavy snow and fog making for a interesting long drive. I have the Matt Murphy Clay Head Sculpture in my possession but have not determined if I will take the clay head with me as it would suffer a terrible meltdown in the heat and humidity. I did get a photo of it in a few locations on the way home like the Mojave desert, Zion National Park, and as a head on a snowman in Meadow Utah. I think I will place it in storage for safe keeping and take it to AU 2008 in Vegas next year.

AUGIWorld 11-2007 For those that did not see it at AU or in their mailbox I was placed on the cover of the current November 2007 AUGIWorld Magazine with an interview about Autodesk\AutoCAD history over the past 25 years in the issue. Some AU attendees even came and got the issue autographed although I am not sure if they were just having fun and goofing.

AU 2007 - Friday Goodbye AU 2007, Start Planning for AU 2008

Welcome to Las Vegas!Thursday Night AU 80s themed party was HUGE and a blast. There were so many people, food , beverages, old 80s video games, pool tables, activities, 2 comedians, 1 chain saw juggler, and the band Tainted Love. After the party I went out with coworkers and customers to Tao upper floor which was a really cool place then for breakfast for the annual chicken and waffles with maple syrup at the Grand Lux located in the Venetian.

Welcome to the AU ExperienceAutodesk University 2007 came to a final end today after the largest attendance of around and it could be a coincidence but when AU ended it got very cold, clouds covered the sky, and rain started here in Las Vegas.

The Wave and Escalante Saturday, Vegas Sunday

I had a great hike today into The Wave famous sandstone formation located in the Paria Wilderness area (entrance by permit only) and then a dive into the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument region with the Grosvenor Arch in Southern Utah. I have had enough of dirt roads. There was no wind or snow but it sure was cold in the morning.

I am tired and soar and need to get some rest before packing up and heading of to Las Vegas and Autodesk University 2007 this week.

On The Road Again, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Brazil, Peru

11-12-2007 travel mapAlready this month (November 2007) I have logged 2400 miles in my truck traveling around the American Southwest and I am going to add more miles to my November tally. Today I leave for Kanab Utah in Southern Utah which I will be using as my base for my solo hike into the Paria Wilderness area Coyote Butte North and visiting the famous wave sandstone structure again and during the hike crossing into Arizona. It can be a hard hike at times especially the deep stand which feels like you have hiked 5 miles for each you do in the sand. Sunday I will be headed for Las Vegas and Autodesk University 2007. After a Week at Autodesk University I then take a flight to São Paulo Brazil for the AUGI CAD Camp Brasil - São Paulo. After a few days in São Paulo I will then take a week of hiking in Iquitos Peru near the mouth of the Amazon river and some jungle exploration.

Tally for this round of 3 weeks of travel:

    • 798 miles by vehicle
    • 17,048 miles by air
    • 100 miles by boat
    • 50 miles at least by foot

Map of hikes and photo treks I will be taking around Las Vegas which are Valley of Fire and Red Rocks Canyon. I also think it would be neat for a small 4 person group of AU Attendees to take a helicopter ride around Vegas, the area, and perhaps the Grand Canyon for photos as that is a fairly short ride in a helicopter and there are many that do this almost on the hour. I took a copter ride in Switzerland up over the Alps and the famous North face of the Eigerhorn and that was soo very cool.

    Happy Thanksgiving

    bare butt tukey

There is a long story behind this gobbler creation but in short it was created back in 2002 by me and my team in a team building contest. It was made from homemade playdough from a recipe. It was once soft and each team member after completing a task had to place a feather in it's little bare butt hence my name for it "The Bare Butt Turkey". It has since hardened to the density of granite.

My travel adventure starts tomorrow with The Wave solo hike, Autodesk University in Vegas, then Brazil and Peru and I still have a million things to do before but have to stop and go eat some real turkey.

    Cheers,
    Shaan

Peruvian Jungle Town Rush Hour and Packing

I am currently packing for my hiking in the Vermillion Cliffs/Paria Wilderness landmark The Wave (more wave links The Wave Revisited, Coyote Buttes, My July 2007 Wave trek) in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah on Saturday then Autodesk University in Las Vegas. 1 day after I return from Autodesk University I depart for São Paulo Brasil (Brazil) for the AUGI CAD Camp where I will be giving two presentations with a question and answer session following "Ajude a moldar o futuro dos produtos da Autodesk" and "Autodesk e AutoCAD 25 anos de história , e o futuro". On the 11th of December since I would already be in South America I plan to make a terk into the beauty of the South American continent as I did a few years back into the Brazilian Amazon. This time I am having a hard time figuring out where my trek will take me with only a small bag (no laptop or other valuables) and my camera. I am looking into another off the beaten track to cleanse the mind and see the rarely seen areas with nobody in front of me or behind on the trail in many places. It is a virtual going tribal trek. The final candidate locations since I have credits for South American air passes for flights to cities in which to use as a base camp or starting point of my personal expedition is Iquitos Peru, Maranhão Brasil, or the Pantanal and Bonito Brasil region.

The video below from YouTube shows the rush hour traffic in Belen Peru near Iquitos. I am thing Iquitos would be a great base camp to start a photo trek. It has all the makings of a great escape and some regions within about 100km from Iquitos are considered to be remote, wild, tribal, vivid, raw, untamed, and uncharted. Yo9u can even get a dorm room at Hobo Hideout for $7 a night but no air conditioning. I have all my yellow fever shots and will pick up some malaria pills for sure before leaving. So I think in writing this Iquitos Peru will be my cheap base point for a nice photo trek and wildlife viewing for a few days.

Here are some photos from Flickr around Iquitos Peru.
