Pin Your Most Frequent Drawings in AutoCAD 2009

Now in AutoCAD 2009 you have the ability to pin items most used such as standard or detail DWG files. This can make the Recent Documents menu much more helpful. I cant tell you how many times I have spent looking for the same base file or document when by pinning the file I would have saved time having to search because it was off the most recent files menu. You can also set the Recent Documents to show a preview of the file as well.

Scale List Cleanup Utility for AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD 2009

Updated version of the Scale List Cleanup Utility April 26th 2008
This Scale List Cleanup Utility repairs a problem with files that contain excess scales. image This utility will soon be posted live to the Autodesk support site http://support.autodesk.com as it has completed beta testing with customers on http://myfeedback.autodesk.com

This tool was developed in response to your customer feedback.
Thank you.

Description of Problem

When a file contains excess scales, performance may be negatively affected. Eventually, the file may become unusable. To use the file, some scales must be removed. This utility repairs affected files by removing excess scales.

NOTE: Nested external references (xrefs) may produce excess scales. To correct this problem, install AutoCAD 2008 Service Pack 1 or corresponding service packs for AutoCAD-based products. The Scale List Cleanup Utility repairs files affected before the necessary service pack was installed.

Affected Products

  • AutoCAD® 2008-based products, including DWG TrueView™ 2008
  • AutoCAD® 2009-based products, including DWG TrueView 2009

Installation Instructions

To install the Scale List Cleanup Utility

This utility has to be installed in the AutoCAD 2008 or AutoCAD 2009 installation folders.

You must have administrative privileges on your Microsoft® Windows® operating system to complete installation.

  1. Based on your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit), download the appropriate self-extracting executable file.
  2. Select a folder.
  3. Extract files to the selected folder.
  4. Navigate to the folder and copy CleanupScales.exe, CleanupScalesRes.dll, and CleanupScales.html to the installation directory of your AutoCAD-based product.
    NOTE: To run this utility you must launch CleanupScales.exe from the installation directory of your AutoCAD-based product.

Repair Affected Files

To repair affected files
  1. Close all affected files. Open affected files will not be repaired.
  2. Launch the Scale List Cleanup Utility from the installation folder of your AutoCAD-based product.
  3. Under Files to Clean, select affected files.
  4. If desired, select Maintain Visual Fidelity for Annotative Objects.
    NOTE: This option allows you to maintain visual fidelity for annotative objects when they are viewed in AutoCAD 2007 or earlier releases and corresponds to the SAVEFIDELITY system variable. Annotative objects may have multiple scale representations. When you select this option, annotative objects are decomposed and scale representations are saved (in an anonymous block) to separate layers, which are named based on their original layer and appended with a number.
  5. Under New Scale List, in the drop-down list, select a scale list template.
    NOTE: Each scale list template contains a different scale list. When you run this utility, unused scales are deleted from files and the scale list from the selected template is applied.
  6. If desired, change the scale list threshold.
    NOTE: The scale list threshold determines the minimum number of scales a file must contain in order to be repaired. The default scale list threshold is 50. Files that contain fewer scales than the scale list threshold will not be repaired. To change the scale list threshold, on the New scale list panel, enter a number in the Scale List Threshold field.
  7. Click OK. Repaired files are saved in the same format last saved in.

AutoCAD 2009 - SnagIt Window Capture Tip

image I have used the screen capture programs SnagIt and Camtasia from my friends at TechSmith for over 10 years now. Screen capturing is an excellent way to communicate something without just relying on words or excellent documenting a process. With the newer software applications being developed these days some like AutoCAD 2009 using XAML are using application frameworks that can be tricky to capture.

image

image When trying to capture or record a single full application window that is using application frames you might find yourself with a small portion of what you wanted to capture or just screen capturing the full desktop and then editing items like the system task menu out which neither are fun.

The trick is it run the application in a minimized window just under full size then select the bottom left corner for the Window capture select.

Hope this helps.

Steelhead Riverbed and 2007 DWG Update Status

Nice post on the updated Autodesk statement regarding changed DWG format and impact on Riverbed WAN acceleration problem.

ID: TS1082827Potential for reduced write performance for Riverbed WAN links when working with AutoCAD 2007 DWG files

Issue
There is a potential for reduced write performance to Riverbed WAN links when you are working with AutoCAD 2007 DWG files.

Solution
In March 2006, Autodesk changed the DWG file format for AutoCAD 2007 to make it more compact and improve performance for AutoCAD users. Autodesk’s customers widely welcomed this change and almost all AutoCAD users have enjoyed improved performance.

However, Autodesk and Riverbed have recently received reports that some customers using some WAN acceleration appliances, including Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances, have experienced noticeable reductions in write performance when working with files saved in the AutoCAD 2007 “DWG” format. One of the side effects of the DWG format changes is that when users perform a complete save from within AutoCAD (as opposed to an “incremental” save), virtually every byte of the file gets changed – even if zero changes were made to the file itself. The net effect is that writes that would normally affect only “warm” data are actually “cold”, due to the reordering of the data in the file.

  1. Users of Riverbed or other affected WAN acceleration solutions can implement the following immediate workarounds that improve write productivity.

  2. Using a feature in AutoCAD called “Incremental Save Percentage” (ISP), and setting it to 50
    Using a version of the DWG format other than the AutoCAD 2007 DWG format
The performance and productivity of our customers is a key consideration for Autodesk and Riverbed. For this reason, our engineering teams are working together to devise workarounds and are examining potential longer-term solutions. Given Riverbed’s experience in WAN acceleration technology, our joint work may also provide solutions for customers of other WAN acceleration or deduplication technologies, who might be experiencing similar issues with write performance. We will provide information on those developments at a later date.
In the meantime, customers should contact Autodesk or Riverbed customer support with any questions, or visit www.autodesk.com/support.

AutoCAD Team Tip: AutoCAD 2009 - Tag Your It

User Tags a productivity Enhancer

This AutoCAD Team Tip is from Randall "Randy" Young who is on the AutoCAD QA Team.

I am not going to lie to you, the Menu Browser may not be as efficient to navigate as the pull down menus, but with its new search technology I believe it can be more affective. Creating user tags can make finding commands easier in the menu browser. By default no tags are assigned to commands, but when they are they will also be displayed in tooltips.

figure 1

Figure 1 – This is the line command tooltip with the tag “Tag” assigned.

Step 1 – Adding a user tag in the CUI (Customize User Interface Dialog)

A. Launch AutoCAD 2009

B. Type CUI in to the command line and hit enter

C. Search in the command list: for LINE and select it

D. Select the node in the CUI dialog that says tags and click the ellipsys (…) button

image

Figure 2 – Is showing the CUI dialog and the new nodes that were created for 2009 (Tags node is selected).

E. Type in your user tag, we will use “Tag”, and ok out of the Tag Editor dialog.

F. Apply and OK out of the CUI dialog

Step 2 – Searching in the Menu Browser

A. Click on the Menu Browser button (Big red A on the top left) or hit Alt + S

B. Type “Tag” into the search field

Result: SHAZAM! You now have a faster way to find commands.

Figure 3

Figure 3 – The Menu browser search with a hit on our tag.

Notice: The Tag icon with the tag text in the tooltip and also that tag icon on the right of the menu browser symbolizing what was the hit in on the search. There are icons for CUI, Tag, and the menu location.

Thank you Randy.

AutoCAD Team Tip: Anatomy of an AutoCAD 2009 Tooltip

This AutoCAD Team Tip is from Randall "Randy" Young who is on the AutoCAD QA Team.

According to Wikipedia “The tooltip is a common graphical user interface element. It is used in conjunction with a cursor, usually a mouse pointer. The user hovers the cursor over an item, without clicking it, and a small box appears with supplementary information regarding the item being hovered over.”

AutoCAD has had tooltips for a long time, but very little ability to customize them. In the following article I will explain the new AutoCAD 2009 tooltips structure and explain how to make your own extended help tooltip.

figure 1

Figure 1 - This is an example of the new command tooltips in AutoCAD 2009. (The content of the tooltip is derived from the CUI file, Name: Line, Description: Creates straight line segments, Command Display Name: LINE)

The new extended tooltips are a good way for cad managers to rollout new tools and information to users. These tooltips are displayed in the Ribbon, Menu Browser and on toolbars.

figure 2

Figure 2 – This is an example of the new extended help tooltip that is displayed after hovering over the control for 2 seconds (by default 2 seconds and controlled in the Options dialog). The extended help tooltip content is stored in a .XAML (Extensible Application Markup Language; pronounced "zammel") file; the image is stored in any assigned directory and linked from the .XAML file.

The following procedure will help you create your own user extended tooltips. I will be using resources that ship in the 2009 release, but you can easily make your own by updating the file we create.

Step 1 – Creating the .XAML file that holds the tooltip information;

A. Create an empty file using Notepad (or your favorite editor), name it tooltips.xaml (you can save this file anywhere).

B. Copy and paste the following content into tooltips.xaml or Download tooltips.XAML.

<ResourceDictionary
xmlns="
http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:src="clr-namespace:Autodesk.Windows;assembly=AdWindows">

<src:ProgressivePanel x:Key="MYEH_CMD_0001">
<StackPanel>
<TextBlock Background="White" TextAlignment="Left">
This is a picture of the bay, wouldn't we all rather be here!
</TextBlock>
<Image Source="C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2009\Sample\bay 6.jpg" Width="Auto" Height="Auto">
</Image>
</StackPanel>
</src:ProgressivePanel>

<src:ProgressivePanel x:Key="MYEH_CMD_0002">
<StackPanel>
<TextBlock Background="Yellow" TextAlignment="Left">
This is a same image from the
<Run Text=" VBA " Foreground="Red" FontStyle="Italic"/>  samples.
</TextBlock>
<Image Source="C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2009\Sample\VBA\2d Projected Polylines.jpg" Width="Auto" Height="Auto">
</Image>
</StackPanel>
</src:ProgressivePanel>
</ResourceDictionary>

Note: This XAML file is creating 2 custom tooltips using some images that ship with AutoCAD 2009.

Step 2 – Attaching the new extended tooltips to the command within AutoCAD;

A. Launch AutoCAD 2009

B. Type CUI in the command line to open the customized user interface

C. In the “Command List:” search for the command you want to attach the extended help to (for this example I am using “Line”) and select it.

figure 3

Figure 3 – Is the CUI dialog with the new “nodes” that are used for the new tooltips. (Extended Help File is the one we need for this operation.)

D. Select the Edit Help File Node and click the ellipsis (…) button at the end of the row.

E. image Navigate to the location of your tooltips.xaml file and select it and open.

Figure 4 – Is showing the list of extended help options that are located in the tooltips.xaml

Note: If you hover over it you will get a preview of the extended help tip.

F. Select the “MYEH_CMD_0001” and ok out of the Select Help ID dialog.

G. Apply and OK out of the CUI.

H. Now hover over the Line command in a toolbar, Ribbon, or Menu Browser.

Result: SHAZAM! You now have a new extended help tooltip.

Shazam!

Thank you Randy! Yes I do wish the tropical image was my view out my window.

Shaan

AutoCAD 2008 Layer Isolate Settings Tip by Michael Beall

The Layer Isolate feature has been around since at least the Bonus collection back in R14. In AutoCAD 2008 they kick it up a notch by adding a Settings feature whereby you can opt to either turn Off the layers you don’t select to isolate, or Lock them … which kicks in the new A2008 Fade control feature.

clip_image004

Here’s the new prompt sequence with a running commentary…

LAYISO

Current setting: Hide layers, Viewports=Off

In the past, any layer not selected to isolate was, by default, turned Off.

Select objects on the layer(s) to be isolated or [Settings]: S

Enter S to launch Settings.

clip_image006Enter setting for layers not isolated [Off/Lock and fade] <Off>: L

You now have the option of Lock and fade; enter L for that option.

Enter fade value (0-90) <60>: [Enter]

clip_image008

The default of the fade percentage is 60% which should be just fine.

In the figures, the furniture and text were selected to isolate, resulting in the building features to be faded. A lock icon indicates the locked layer when the cursor rolls across a locked layer.
