The Matt Murphy Clay Head Poses with Jay Leno Lastnight

Jay Leno and Matt Murphy Clay Head

Jay Leno and the infamous Matt Murphy Clay Head Sculpture from Autodesk University 2007 made a Hollywood style appearance at Jay Leno's car garage http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/ on its travels around the world. They use Autodesk products at Jay's Garage and have one of the largest private collections of amazing cars and car experts. I was there with Marie Domingo of Autodesk providing some update tips and tricks for new AutoCAD 2009 and shot with the garage staff for an upcoming Jay's Garage segment on AutoCAD.

Missed the Wienermobile yesterday...

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile "Bologna" in Gilford, New Hampshire, August 19, 2007Yesterday I saw the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile for a fleeting moment then it was gone. I wanted to grab my camera and get some photos, but it was not to be. I thought how often do you see over a 10 foot wiener driving down the road and had to get a picture of it. I called the Oscar Mayer public relations and left a message and they kindly called me back to tell me that unfortunately the Wienermobile was leaving the area and driving to Portland Oregon today. The driver "hotdogger" is from the Salt Lake area so I have high hopes I will get my chance to see the Wienermobile up close, some day and also get one of those free handout Weiner whistles. http://kraftfoods.com/oscarmayer/omm_wienermobile.htm

"A newer model of the Wienermobile was built by Prototype Source, a company in Santa Barbara, California, that specializes in building one-of-a-kind vehicles and concept cars." - http://www.roadtripamerica.com/wheels/oscar.htm

Fun Pipe Fitting Specification

For all those involved in piping here is a fun specification to add to your drawing to see if the shop foreman is really reading your notes. I don't remember the origin of this creative piping humor but I used it back in my piping and vessel design days.

1. All pipe is to be made of a long hole, surrounded by metal centered around the hole.

2. All pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire length.

3. All pipe is to be of the very best quality, preferably tubular or pipular.

4. All acid-proof pipe is to made of acid-proof metal.

5. The O.D. (outside diameter) of the pipe MUST EXCEED the I.D. (inside diameter) otherwise the hole will be on the outside of the pipe.

6. All pipe is to be supplied with nothing inside the hole so water, steam, or other stuff can be put inside the pipe at a later date.

7. All pipe is to be supplied without rust, as this can be more readily put on at the job site.

8. All pipe is to be free of any covering such as mud, tar, barnacles or any form of manure before putting up, otherwise it will make lumps under the paint.

9. All pipe over 500 feet in length must have the words "Long Pipe" clearly painted on each end so the fitter will know it is a long pipe.

10. Pipe over two miles long must also have "Long Pipe" painted in the middle so the fitter will not have to walk the entire length of the pipe to determine if it is a long pipe or not.

11. All pipes over six inches in diameter is to have the words "Large Pipe" painted on so the fitter will not use it for a small pipe.

12. All pipe closures are to be open on one end.

13. All pipe fittings are to be made of the same stuff as the pipe.

14. Pipe specified as "Straight Pipe" shall not have fittings within its length, otherwise it becomes "Crooked Pipe."

Scott Sheppard - A Dead Man Posting ;-)

Just noticed in my RSS feed reader the following post on the Autodesk Labs blog...

AutoCAD Elves from It’s Alive in the Lab by Scott Sheppard

"Shaan Hurley will make sure this comes back to haunt me, but here goes:

It takes a while to load, but it's worth it. Happy Holidays."

Well it is elves dancing and it has the faces of Lynn Allen, myself, and Heidi Hewett on them. Scott, as the old saying goes revenge is a dish best served cold. Bwahahahaha.

OK I did have a hard laugh over this. :-)

Scott Sheppard of Autodesk Labs - Now and Back from the 80s

2007_11_27_3037 I cant believe Scott was brave enough to blog a photo of himself from the eighties but he was motivated to do so after photos of Lynn Allen were posted from AU 2007. He asked what I was like in the eighties, "uhhh rock on dewd, where's my hair brush".

I am now just getting ready to leave Las Vegas and head North where it is currently slowing which will slow my drive from around 6 hours to perhaps as long as 10 hours but I have a good co-pilot the Matt Murphy Clay Head Sculpture to navigate the weather.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster in Freewheel

RobiNZ-FSM Longtime AutoCAD user Robert Grandmaison has snapped, I think. I noticed on Robin Capper's blog RobiNZ CAD Blog the "The Flying Spaghetti Monster meets Freewheel". Pretty amusing but shows about anything 2D or 3D can be hosted in Autodesk Freewheel straight from AutoCAD and many other Autodesk products with nothing for anyone to install to view your files.

AutoCAD and Flugtag?

What is the connection?  Well AutoCAD user Ralph Sanchez shared his and a team "Superman's "CRIP"Tonight" made first and last flight of their "GimpMobile" for the Red Bull  Flugtag event last Saturday night held in on of my favorite places, Austin Texas. AutoCAD was used early in the conceptual design of this interesting aircraft piloted by Mark Zupan who has a history of flying projectiles for fun. From ralphsanchez

They took 2nd place in the event. For Flugtag trivia fans the Austin event of Flugtag was the first time the event was held at night. I like the night views of the contestants. Of course this event is all for fun and flying is not really the main goal as having a great time and getting wet is.

Autodesk University 2007 Draft Class List

Check out the details from Joseph on the draft list of classes and the PowerTracks for Autodesk University 2007. It wont be long and the best design software event will be here with thousands descending upon Vegas in November 2007.

The Venetian Hotel and Casino is currently expanding to meet the demand as we over ran the hotel last year. Venetian Addition 061130_051I like to think the only reason for the $100 million project addition of another 4000 rooms and more than 150,000 square feet of new meeting and convention space was due to AU and my Blue Man group performance. ;-)

Jason Pratt's YouTube'd Tutorial on AutoCAD Layouts and Publish

New YouTube video: How to use Layouts and Publish in AutoCAD
2 parts.

Actually despite Jason's reservations his voice was not all that bad although you could tell he was in a empty office. I liked that he did not have a mono toned boring tutorial voice and it did not at all seem canned or over prepared  as it was a freestyle demo for fun and benefit of others.

The only content remark I would mention is that I noticed is Jason did not show you can hide (default) the Layout tabs and now with AutoCAD 2008 even reorder them and rename them as you would a Excel spreadsheet tab (wicked cool).

Keep those tutorials coming Jason and others feel free to join in and share a tutorial with others. I did post on YouTube the When Stupid Tourists Attack" Kangaroo video with that awful background music sung by Scott Sheppard of the blog http://labs.blogs.com/.

Shaan
