Its Friday ~ aMaze Drawing

Here is a AutoCAD DWG drawing file created back in 2002 for fun and testing by Aaron Johnson and recently updated by me. I have provided the DWF as well as the DWG for download and use for fun.

aMaze DWG in AutoCAD 2009
aMaze as seen in AutoCAD 2009

Download aMaze.dwg 2MB

Download Maze.dwf

View it in Freewheel nothing to install works in most browsers on most operating systems. I updated the link so you do not need to log into Freewheel. When you have a DWF on Freewheel you have the option of setting a password and allowing a collaboration session with markiung up and notes all for free.

LINK to DWF in Freewheel (updated 20, July 2008)

Why Freewheel? Be free of software installs, free to view, and free access to data.

Have you Seen CADoogle?

It’s birthday is this week if I am correct on my dates.

You can search and view DWF files on the web all without installing a single application. 2D or 3D does not matter as CADoogle uses Autodesk Freewheel to display the views of DWF files in any Java supporting browser. I even found my own neighborhood all detailed out in DWF format by the local county planning department.

Free One Click 2D and 3D Design Collaboration - Updated ShareNow Utility from Autodesk Labs

This free utility from Autodesk Labs allows you to one click publish to the free hosted Project Freewheel from your AutoCAD based products as well as Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Inventor Autodesk Freewheel is for quick and easy sharing of designs online in the DWF format.

Scott provides a detailed list of the update on his Its Alive Autodesk Labs blog.

figure 1Here is the new floating toolbar after I installed the latest ShareNow on AutoCAD 2009 as I gave it a run through.

figure 2Figure 2 is my design published to Project Freewheel which is a hosted zero client viewing site meaning nothing is required to be installed to view 2D or 3D designs. No need to be clogging up emails with attached files or someone having to install something to view a design or be on a certain version of a viewing application.

You can use the Wheel to Zoom and Pan within the design.

I Better Get Busy, I made the Autodesk.com Home page ;-)

image I have been swamped with the Autodesk 2009 product line launches, the beta projects wrapping up on many of the products, took a week off and went hiking and shutterbugging in Southern Utah, and then I got sick. No time for any of that now that I have hit the big time with my blog being on the main page of Autodesk.com.

I have a few blog posts in draft I will finish up and get them online like the updated ShareNow utility from the Autodesk Labs. As you may have noticed I have been adding some guest articles and tips from fellow AutoCAD users to add more perspective and knowledge like the Layer Isolate tip from Michael Beall and I have a few more guest authors. If anyone else has tips and tricks to share with Between the Lines all you have to do is email me at shaan@autodesk.com.

Shaan

Autodesk Content Search alpha Technology Preview Now Alive and Free

Powered by Autodesk Content Search

What:
Early this morning Autodesk has made available a web based alpha technology preview of the beginnings of our new content search technology. Autodesk Content Search may not be the official name. There will be 2D and 3D content from many of the leading content aggregators like McGraw Hill Sweets, BIMWorld, and Reed FirstSource. In addition to the content aggregators we also are providing all the sample content from AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP which will  be indexed into the search content. The browse option on Content Search alpha allows you to browse for content using AEC industry standard classifications, including MasterFormat 2004, Omniclass 1.0, and Uniformat II. In this first incarnation of Autodesk Content Search it is mainly aimed at AEC architecture but could be expanded in the future for more disciplines.

In the searches you will see supported file formats from the Revit RFA, AutoCAD DWG, DWF, DGN, SKP, Word documents, and PDF. If the DWF is in your content item result you can even choose to view it in Autodesk Freewheel with no installation of anything required.

Where:

http://cs.labs.autodesk.com/?target=_blank

Why:
This alpha technology preview is for you to have a look at a product evolving and actively seeking feedback to help shape the future. It is different than a standard web search engine as it actually can search based on the attributes of the design data and parameters. Currently the attributed data is only extracted only from DWG files and Revit RFA files. Content Search alpha will be updated constantly.

Wicked Cool - Freewheeling Freely

Collaborate in Freewheel

Swedish technical guru Jimmy Bergmark posted a nice overview of some of the changes in the free Autodesk  Freewheel project from Autodesk Labs. Note to Jimmy, lookout some have an issue with the "Collaboration" word but what other word would you use to describe it, perhaps "working-together mode"? :-)

Jimmy showed some examples of the sketching, Impression styles, navigation, and callouts. Pretty cool stuff for both 2D and 3D design data.

Shaan

Autodesk Project Showroom- 3D Web Based Visualization is Live on Autodesk Labs

A new Autodesk Labs project named "Autodesk Project Showroom" has just gone live and is  3D web based design visualization with more possibilities in the future for this Autodesk technology project.

Autodesk Project Showroom Information Page: http://labs.autodesk.com/technologies/showroom/

You can see Scott's announcement on this project at http://labs.autodesk.com/blogs/its_alive_in_the_lab/view/project-showroo/.

An example project http://showroom.dwfit.com Go ahead drag a few new items to this example project of a bathroom and see the results as well as change the view by orbiting or zooming.

It can also track costs of changes or other data based on the objects and changes.

Looks like Freewheel is expanding the possibilities of design information on the web without the need to install software or use a specific single operating system. Imagine sending someone to configure a project by simply sending them an URL and not worrying about most compatibility issues  as this is about as easy as it can get just like viewing a 2D or 3D DWF in Freewheel.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark and my Ramblings on Design

Schlitterbahn South Padre Island Saw this today on the travel channel while just relaxing and got hooked. They showed the South Padre Island Texas water park Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark (36 acres) and the water rides as well as behind the scenes. They also showed AutoCAD being used by the the company NBGS (Jeff and Gary Henry). The cable television program was 1 hour long and really was interesting not like a advertisement it was all about the rides, the design and stats.

The Schlitterbahn Boogie Bahn 2 sheet wave was amazing and said to be the largest manmade surf wave in the US and holds a competition of surfers each year. The sheet wave is a custom designed structure and uses technology from Autodesk Inventor using firm FlowRider by Wave Loch. There was also the Master Blaster which you ride in a inflatable raft vehicle down a large structure at almost 20 mph. They use an ingenious water jet system to propel you even uphill up to 50 feet. This is all tempting me to take a vacation down to South Padre as I just scheduled a sabbatical for this August and will be looking for fun distractions. I also saw that you don't have to stand in lines as most water feature lines are kept in the water to keep you cool. That sure would make for an awesome day but you may end up with pruned fingers and a sunburn.

DESIGN

You might be surprised to know many of the rides around the world such as water rides, roller coasters, ferris wheels, bungee towers, or other amusement and theme park ride and structures may have most likely been designed using Autodesk products such as AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Autodesk Inventor, Maya, etc. I have spoken with many designers over the past years including many designers that design coasters and waterparks around the world and use Autodesk products like AutoCAD. One of the worlds most famous and innovative coaster design firms (and featured an another TV channel I love to watch the Discovery Channel) is located here in Utah and designed one of the first roller coaster cork screw featuring rides. Although most old school coaster designers used string or wire to first model the features then a pencil, many today use software. There is also Water Technology of Beaver Dam Wisconsin (hi Joel)designing water parks with Autodesk products including the new Autodesk Impression. David Harrington a former Autodesk Users Group International "AUGI" Top DAUG and AUGI President worked on the design for the Disney MGM Studios Aerosmith themed coaster Rock 'n Roller Coaster in AutoCAD, see this in the Autodesk Freewheel Examples.

This is not a marketing or sales advertisement, I am just a design junkie at heart, and appreciate and am passionate about design.

Many times I find myself missing being a full time mechanical designer like I was 10 years ago. There is nothing like designing a product and seeing it from conception to completion and functioning. I am so envious of Autodesk customers and the products they design and build every day in the world.

I may not always be an Autodesk employee, but I will always be a designer. - Shaan
