Jay Leno's Green Garage

See Jay Leno's solar and wind system for his car garage in the embedded video below or at www.jaylenosgarage.com. I got the rare opportunity to visit with Jay and his team a couple weeks ago in his secret car collection buildings and it was unbelievable to say the least.

I recently provided some AutoCAD 2009 upgrade training to Jay's team who use Autodesk products like AutoCAD and even Autosketch in the designing one off replacement parts for Jay's world class car collection when Jay breaks them. I got to reverse engineer a Model T Ford bearing cap in 3D while there. I met some of the worlds most experienced and knowledgeable engineers, car lovers, and top notch fabricators in his shop. This is also where I met the legendary Eddie Paul who is a legend in metal fabrication and designing cars for the movies, mechanical sharks, new types of motors and just about everything else using AutoCAD 2009 and 3ds Max and soon Autodesk Inventor.

Jay Leno's Hydrogen Fuel Cell SUV GM YukonI even got a slick ride back to my hotel in Jay's hydrogen cell powered GM SUV which runs on hydrogen. I would love to have a hydrogen powered vehicle but with only 40 of them made so far they run about 1 million dollars so the price needs to come down to an affordable level.
One funny thing I found out is Jay is a happy mouse clicker on a computer "click" "click" "click" "click" when only one click was needed. He is a very down to earth guy off camera and like myself he does not sleep much and is always going.

  • Navigate drawings in 2D and 3D with SteeringWheel
  • Enhanced 3D view selection with ViewCube
  • Restore views and play new "animated" views with ShowMotion

System Requirement and Features of DWG TrueView
Frequently Asked Questions About DWG

All that is required is completing the download form. The file download is a whopping 193MB but to be able to have much of the functionality of AutoCAD for viewing, plotting, and file conversion it takes that much. So for free you get 100% DWG and the AutoCAD core you can rely and trust for those that don't need a full CAD to view or convert DWG files but want full data and visual fidelity and compatibility.

Autodesk Subscription Value

This blog article was submitted by Florida based AutoCAD user Brian Benton. Check out Brian's blog for more http://cadablog.blogspot.com/

How often do you (or the company you work for) update your AutoCAD software? How much does it cost? What are the benefits of upgrading? How difficult will it be for our users to upgrade?

These are but a few questions CAD Managers and IT Directors ask every March. Why? Because it is the time of year for the newness of spring, baseball, taxes (in the U.S. anyway) and the release of new Autodesk products! This year is no different. So, what are you going to do? If your company is considering upgrading to the latest release of design software from Autodesk, then may I suggest going with their subscription plan.

Let’s take a look at what it can offer you and your design team. In a nutshell, Autodesk subscription will provide a user with software updates, online training, web support and now even more (I’ll get into that later.) Don’t I get that without subscription? Not really. Without subscription you will pay full price for the software and then pay somebody else to train your users. If something goes wrong you will pay again to have it fixed. Where’s the fun in that?

The most obvious reason (and perhaps the most important) is that members of the subscription program will receive the latest updates to their subscribed software. Nice, real nice! Here’s how it works, again, in a nutshell. A user purchases a license of their favorite Autodesk product (AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, etc.) then purchases the subscription plan. During the length of that plan, if Autodesk releases a new release, then said user will receive it, at no additional cost. Since Autodesk has released a new version of most of their products every year since 2003, that has added up to huge savings for many users and companies. At the end of your subscription contract, just renew it. Of course the price of subscription is much lower than the price of the application, thus the savings. AND, if Autodesk decides to skip a year, you will still be saving. I suggest you take a look at Autodesk’s pricing to better understand this, but you will quickly see the financial benefits from subscription.

In the case that saving tons of cash were not reason enough to subscribe, Autodesk has added some additional carrots to sweeten the pot. Besides the automatic update of software, subscribers will also receive (I sound like a game show host-tell them what they’ve won Bob!!) direct one-on-one technical support from Autodesk (via web support); self paced e-learning lessons (to keep users up to date on the latest software); and extended licensing privileges.

All of these added benefits to subscription mean that you and your company will always have the latest software and the training needed to run it! If an issue pops up, just contact Autodesk via the web support. One more thing (as if cheaper, faster, and better wasn’t enough), Autodesk has added something to subscription available for the 2009 releases. Impression. Impression is a design document illustration software package. That’s a fancy way of saying that Impression will digitally render a drawing with the ability to make it look hand rendered. It was first released last year with great success. This year, Impression 2 will be available via a download to subscribers only!! For free! Anyone that is creating drawings and needs to better illustrate those drawings (better compared to 2D black and white prints) can, and should be using, use Impression. Go on and check it out before you buy, wait a minute, it’s free to subscribers!!

To wrap this up, Autodesk’s Subscription Program is a good deal. Users will get the latest software (at a better rate), free training, free tech support, free Impression, and even more. If you are looking at updating your Autodesk products, I suggest checking out their subscription plan before you buy.

Round Two - More AutoCAD 2009, other Autodesk 2009 Product Links, and Autodesk World Press Day

I made it back from San Francisco for the Autodesk World Press Days but took 4 hours longer due to an engine not starting on the plane (commercial airline), then after an hour and a half of them working on it we took off headed for Salt Lake city only to circle for over an hour over the Western Utah desert while the Salt Lake City airport was closed due to heavy snow. While checking ion for the flight I was talking with a few people about my travel curse passed onto me by my former boss Shawn Gilmore. My travel curse has been fairly unique in many respects like North Korea firing misses over the China Sea while I was above, trapped in Queenstown New Zealand, luggage being lost and once right before meeting Autodesk founder John Walker in Switzerland, jets loss of fuel while over the Atlantic and an emergency landing in New York, computers stolen, police raid on a jet for a passenger smoking in the bathroom, several inches of snow in Tokyo before I landed and it does not snow there too often, stuck for 7 hours in custom while Brazilian customs agents went on strike, detained in Canada only to be told a few hours later "it must have been an American security database issue", Been in too many storm of the century examples like in Vancouver last year when it seemed the world and all trees were being rearranged and all power out and water contaminated, and many more unfortunately. People now ask me to email them before I travel to allow them to escape the region or avoid the same flights.

Autodesk World Press DaysI had a few sessions and meetings yesterday. I had a good discussion with Ralph Grabowski, ran into Martyn Day for only a second but long enough to get his picture, attended a lunch presentation from an auto designer from China's NAC. On the way to the airport I shared a cab with a journalist and had a great discussion about the worlds eroding infrastructure such as bridges and utilities and how their continued lack of attention after construction will result in a poor future.

One thing I took away from the World Press Days that I was not really aware of was how critical NavisWorks was to the large projects  in the entire AEC Industry and BIM projects to save time, resources, and costs by showing a project in 4D where time is considered in the 3D project so you can plan project flow or all design data in 3D for collision detection and multi discipline coordination. NavisWorks was shown in most of the AEC presentations from large buildings and their piping or overall construction to the new span of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.

    Autodesk 2009 Product Links

The news, highlights, and opinions are now starting to flow on the web. Once the products start shipping and people start using the products I am sure there will be much more information. Currently only partners, beta testers from http://myfeedback.autodesk.com, and Autodesk employees have been using the pre-release products. Also most of the CAD industry press and journalists are in San Francisco for the Autodesk World Press Days, so once many of them get back online or printing I am sure there will be articles from them.

    Autodesk World Press Days

I am in San Francisco attending the Autodesk World Press Days and posted some photos from yesterday. The lighting was dim during the presentations and I did not want to be popping flashes in the presenters eyes, so I just took a bunch of photos and looked for the best and crossed my fingers the presenters would not move during the longer exposure needed. I need to fully annotate my photos but wont have the time until after my flight this afternoon.

It was a very interesting day with many presentations from Autodesk Industry  and management and industry leading customers. I will have to digest my audio and notes for more information. I was really impressed the story of reshaping of a CNC Machine Manufacturers business by an Autodesk Inventor customer Jeff Richlin using digital prototyping, Mortenson Constructions explanation of the construction process changes with BIM, and also the Sony video of the Chicago Spire building. Note Sony an Autodesk Maya house showed a screen image of the upcoming Flying Spaghetti Monster Movie.

So much was going on until late at night and so many familiar faces in addition to the Autodesk employees like Bill fane, Dr. Joel Orr, Ralph Grabowski, Kenneth Wong, Roopinder Tara (nice blogging discussion), Bill Adams, Martyn Day, Ed Goldberg, and met a couple from VerySpatial during lunch who use new media and podcast on GIS/GPS.

I need to get back to the event before my boss notices I am running late as today is demos and press interviews but I hope to make time to see the Autodesk Labs demo area as well as play the game Rock Band or Guitar Hero which is being shown as it was created in Autodesk's 3ds Max.

The 2009 Products Including AutoCAD 2009

AutoCAD 2009 Splash Image     Today the announcement of the next release of AutoCAD 2009 code named "Raptor" (like a hawk) as well as many other products have been announced from Autodesk World Press Day. The products will start shipping later but are not currently. I will begin to post on the features in more depth as well as link and trackbacks to those doing the same as there is a huge CAD blogging community now. The official new products content on the Autodesk.com website and public discussion groups will go live in the next few weeks with further details as the launch begins.

During beta I think the largest hurdle was getting used to the User Interface changes of the new ribbon. Most got used to it after using it and it is more customizable than the standard MS Office ribbon and can also be turned off. The Release Candidate that was last delivered to beta sites has now been updated based on their feedback and reporting and we wish to sincerely thank them all for the active feedback and helping shape the future of the products.

Autodesk Products Customer Error Reporting (CER) Now Does a Roundtrip!

Now when you crash an Autodesk product not only  is the important details are sent to Autodesk and later an email notification if you entered your email address when a fix is available, but now you can see/search immediately if there is a fix for this issue. Unlike many other software companies that simply rely on a default crash reporting mechanism that may just send out your feedback and the valuable details into a black hole or to Microsoft who cannot fix the problem and offers no help of any kind, Autodesk knows how important it is to correct any issues we can with our products. This is a very important project and resulting in more stable and higher performing Autodesk products which results in happier and more productive customers.

I have wrote many blog posts over the years on CER and CIP explaining the process and why you should participate as it helps you get resolutions to issues you have been encountering or with CIP your command usage of AutoCAD 2008 helps develop a greater understanding by Autodesk on how our products are used and how to improve.

    AutoCAD CER http://www.autodesk.com/cer

    Autodesk Customer Involvement Program (CIP)

ADSK-CIPNow with AutoCAD 2008 Customer Involvement Program (CIP) a customer can elect to send anonymous usage data we will get even better. We hope that customers will enable anonymous CIP data reporting to help us understand how they are using our products so that we can make even more solid decisions based on that data.

Please make sure if you do happen to crash (we hope you don't) to be sure to send in the CER report each time it occurs so our teams can research the culprit. And no, there are no file names, bank accounts, DNA details, covert black helicopters circling when you send the data or people checking your serial numbers and knocking on your doors. In fact all the data is on your machine unencrypted before sending if you like to snoop and verify for yourselves.

Autodesk Products and Microsoft Windows Vista White Paper

    Greetings from Brasil!
I was sent the following white paper dealing in-depth with Autodesk products and Microsoft Windows Vista support. It will soon be on the Autodesk website but I have provided a copy for you now.

    "Introduction
With the introduction of Microsoft® Windows Vista, Autodesk® customers have another choice of operating systems. Whether a company opts to adopt Windows Vista, Windows® XP, or another supported operating system (OS), Autodesk applications deliver exceptional performance across the board.

To ensure the superlative performance of Autodesk applications on Microsoft operating systems, Autodesk has worked closely with Microsoft over the past 12 years, collaborating on product development, bringing innovative technologies to market, and exceeding customer expectations. As a Microsoft Platinum Partner, a Global ISV, and a member of Microsoft’s Manufacturing ISV program, Autodesk’s close relationship with Microsoft enhances Autodesk’s ability to provide products that raise the bar for innovation and transcend operating systems. Whether companies use Microsoft Vista or Microsoft XP operating systems, Autodesk is committed to delivering solutions that provide the functionality its customers have come to expect.

The close collaborations between Autodesk and Microsoft result in simultaneous support for new technologies, as evidenced by the compatibility of Autodesk applications with Windows Vista and Microsoft’s adoption of the Autodesk DWF file format as a native part of Windows Vista. In addition, Autodesk has chosen the Direct3D graphics application programming interface (API) developed by Microsoft over the alternative OpenGL API. By aligning with Microsoft on Direct3D, Autodesk is delivering a highly positive experience to customers using its products with Windows Vista. For more information on how Direct3D enhances the user experience for graphics-intensive applications, see page 15 of this paper.

While Autodesk believes that Windows Vista will become the industry-standard OS over time, the Autodesk 2008 product line increases design efficiency and cost savings for customers using any supported OS. Companies that plan to deploy Windows Vista this year may have questions about whether their specific Autodesk applications are compatible with Windows Vista and what kinds of performance changes they may expect. This paper addresses Vista compatibility and performance on a product by-product basis, as well as highlights the new functionality of the Autodesk 2008 products.
