AutoCAD for the Mac

I have in the past posted about AutoCAD on the Apple Mac platform.

  • I even posted a survey for feedback which was pummeled with hits in the tens of thousands in only a few days. We appreciate all the great feedback and are considering each and every response. We at Autodesk are growing more and more Mac platform products and who knows, perhaps add AutoCAD to the list.In any case this is not a gratuitous Mac post to get hits instead I am looking for something.

Back in the 1980’s Autodesk actually had an AutoCAD R11/R12 for the Mac.

I have only been a Mac user for a few months but wanted to see if any fellow AutoCAD longtime users and history buffs might have a rare AutoCAD R11/R12 for the Mac or at least some screenshots. I will give a reward to the person who has the best set of images or a boxed product so I can add to my unofficial AutoCAD History web archive and images.

So do you have an old AutoCAD R11/R12 Mac laying around or some images and screenshots, email me at shaan@autodesk.com

    Cheers,
Shaan (now both Mac and PC user)

    Autodesk 2010 Product Codenames

For those interested in Autodesk trivia, this is for you. When software is being developed it does not have a formal name, and is often referred to as a codename project throughout development and beta testing. The names are selected by the teams and some take great liberty and humor in their selection while some may align with their products theme.

Below is the only complete listing of Autodesk internal codenames for 2010 projects thus far.

The Final Part 4 Interview with John Walker Founder of Autodesk

The final part is now posted. Part 4 deals with a discussion about past and future business opportunities in John’s opinion, a raw no sugar added form. John was the founder of Autodesk but he has been disassociated for many years from Autodesk living in a beautiful quaint village in Switzerland.

Kean did a stellar job on this 4 part interview series. I thought he did better than some formally anointed journalist interviews, but he is a blogger Through the Interface.

  • Part 1 - Autodesk's early history
  • Part 2 - AutoCAD's architecture & APIs
  • Part 3 - Autodesk's eco-system and strategy
  • Part 4 - Past and future opportunities

In honor of the completion of this series, I will be posting some more old Autodesk and AutoCAD memorabilia later today to my Flickr photo sets http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/ in the Autodesk and AutoCAD History Set.

Interview with Autodesk Founder John Walker - Part 3

Kean WalmsleyKean Walmsley has now posted part 3 of a 4 part series of interviews with Autodesk founder John Walker who started Autodesk 26 years ago. This has been a great read to understand Autodesk and AutoCAD back in the early days a sort of Autodesk 1.0. Only one more part to go next Friday.

    Part 3 teaser excerpts
”From the outset the architecture of AutoCAD was intended to be as open as possible.”

“because they don't have $150,000 for an Intergraph workstation”

“One huge contributor to AutoCAD's success was the book Inside AutoCAD.

“I met Gates and I asked him, "why didn't you come after us?" And he said…"

“AutoCAD, to my knowledge, did something in the software industry that has never, ever happened with any other product. It sold more than a million copies at more than $1,000 a copy.”

“A Wall Street analyst … he said, "they're all going to fail, you're going to succeed, and you're going to succeed because they all under-estimate the power of the franchise and of an installed base. That you have. They don't have community colleges teaching their products, they don't have shops with ten stations that are buying three or four more.”

    Go give it a read:

  • Part 1 - Autodesk's early history
  • Part 2 - AutoCAD's architecture & APIs
  • Part 3 - Autodesk's eco-system and strategy
  • Part 4 - Past and future opportunities
  • Thank you Kean!

Part Two Deux of John Walker Interview by Kean

Kean Through the Interface posted part 2 of his 4 part series of an interview of Autodesk founder John Walker hits on the AutoCAD software architecture, APIs, UNIX, LISP, and more.

An interview with John Walker - Part 2

Why do we talk about Autodesk history from the 80’s? This is a simple and easy answer; because John Walker is amazing person and was a key changing force to most anyone in the CAD or design business today, or those using computers for design. Also Autodesk has a long and successful history and track record that not many software companies can claim. Besides it is fun to know where we have been and the thinking behind it and relive the nostalgia as many have been using Autodesk products since the beginning days.

I was in the Bay Area Autodesk offices this week and saw some cool stuff from the past and photographed them for later posting. I also got to see something that will have a grand opening next Wednesday and focuses on Design and the future. It was awesome and once it is announced publicly, I will post about my experience and photos.

You can’t know where you are going without first knowing where you have been. Autodesk having been around 26 years, we have been many places and looking forward to many many more heading into the future.

    Cheers,
    Shaan

An interview with John Walker Kudos to Kean!

My coworker a top notch developer, and also a fellow blogger (Through the Interface) Kean Walmsley just figured out that the founder of Autodesk lives not too far from the Autodesk office in Switzerland. Kean lives in Switzerland. So he had a visit and interview with John Walker, which for anyone is a treat and experience of a lifetime.

I got to do the same last year in honor of the 25th Anniversary of Autodesk and AutoCAD and still need to release some of the discussions as I recorded it on video and it was planned to be shown at AU and on the web but plans fell through. John is a wealth of knowledge and a really nice person.

    • Check out Kean’s detailed series of interviews with Autodesk founder John Walker. Part 1 is posted now and in true Kean style is very detailed and a great writer.

John Walker holding an M9900 and the prototype hardcover manual for AutoCAD 2.1

    Shaan Hurley & John Walker
John Walker and me in the same location of the ominous warning “Danger de mort”.

I would love to hear how John’s recent solar ellipse trip to the North Pole went and also his take on the recent CERN experiments in Switzerland and some of the paranoid concerns out on the web that a black hole would be generated and destroy all of us. Note CERN ran a test the other day and all was fine and we are all still here and not stuck in a manmade black hole or time vortex. :-)

Update 15 September 2008: John Walker emailed me directly on the two questions I had posted in this post.

He had a great time on the voyage to the North Pole to see the solar eclipse and has a web page about it. http://www.fourmilab.ch/images/eclipse_2008/

John also survived the “doomsday device” as some incorrectly portrayed the CERN collider. John lives not too far from CERN and answered with humor as usual  “Still here. Uh-oh--SHPLORK!!!”

"Kean, please email me photos so I can place them in the Autodesk History Flickr library. On a related Autodesk History note I received a box yesterday full of old 80’s Autodesk memorabilia including a ton of photo slides. I can’t wait to go through it perhaps this weekend.

    Cheers,
    Shaan

Autodesk University 2008 General Design Campus Highlight: Sharks Real Enough to Bite; Made in AutoCAD

Eddie Paul and Autodesk Products.I am excited to mention that Eddie Paul known as Hollywood’s best kept secret will be presenting at Autodesk University 2008.

Eddie is an amazing guy. I met him in June of this year and got to see some of his creations which span from Hollywood special effects, Hollywood movie cars and props, to revolutionary motor designs and video technology. He is a modern day inventor as well as master craftsman writing many books on metal fabrication and bodywork including a book on how to customize cars like the ones form the movie Fast and Furious.

Eddie has even done time as a successful Hollywood Stuntman. He is just amazing to talk with and hear about the things he has done and been involved in. Throughout the years Eddie has relied on AutoCAD and 3ds Max products to help design his projects and currently for his rotary motor design getting into Autodesk Inventor.

Eddie Paul "The Frog" CarEddie recently sent me some pictures of his Ford Mustang named “the Frog” which had been customized using AutoCAD including cool front headlights that turn the direction the driver is steering.

    General Design Campus Highlights

Believe It! AutoCAD continues to evolve. Come discover the latest enhancements including the new 3D features and ribbon user interface. The product has changed enormously since its introduction in 1982, but one thing remains the same: AutoCAD is an easy- to-use and powerful solution that enables you to work within any environment.

General Design Keynote: "Believe It. Sharks Real Enough to Bite; Made in AutoCAD"

Speaker: Eddie Paul, Hollywood special effects and stunt designer
    Date/Time: Wednesday, December 3/1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
    Location:

Wishing a Fellow Desker Happy Trails

During life people come and people go. People make decisions and changes in their life and careers all the time and a good friend and coworker of mine has just made several.

Tim McMahonTim (leave no stone unturned) McMahon has been with Autodesk since dinosaurs ruled the source code vaults (just kidding) but he is one of the earliest Autodesk employees remaining. Tim has been with the AutoCAD Team involved in QA testing since the early days of John Walker running the company. Tim has always been a good example and asset of the company and extremely humble. He is also a fun person to mess around with but beware he will give payback at some point in the future as he always told me “Hurley, I am keeping a big folder on you”. Tim was also one of the largest Hawaiian print shirt consumers on the mainland and brought a special Tom Selleck look to the office environment. Tim is now embarking on a change in his life in what I called Tim 2.0 or Tim 1.0 C4a.

Tim has also been a private pilot and in the 10 years I have worked with him never been in the air with him but perhaps someday if he vectors over my direction I will get the chance.

Timmy (I meant Tim) said he wants to take time and relax with the family and ponder what he can do in the next phase of his life. Tim will be missed by us deskers but we all wish him the best in whatever he decides to do in Tim 2.0 or Tim 1.0 C4a.

    Happy Trails Tim!

    Best Regards,
    Shaan

    AutoCAD R14 and Windows Vista

AutoCAD R14 Launch Icon It has been 11 years since AutoCAD R14 was released and it was long before Microsoft even considered a Windows Vista Operating System. Being one that likes to run the older versions of products for comparing features as well as pure geek’ish fun I was getting smartheap errors on Windows Vista when trying to run AutoCAD R14 until I found NinjaWaynes post with a solution posted in the Autodesk discussion forums that works. The solution is in the lengthy thread and includes the Vista version of the SH31W32.DLL that solves the issue of R14 compatibility with Windows Vista
    http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?threadID=543852

AutoCAD R14 running on Windows VistaOf course this solution is not official or supported and you are on your own for any side effects it may have but you end up being able to get AutoCAD R14 running on Vista without the errors. You should also be aware that since AutoCAD R14 was not designed with Vista in mind there are some features or drivers that may not work with today’s Operating System.

R14 sure seems fast but it is also lacking many of the essential productivity enhancements over the past 11 years some as simple but vital as the double wheel click zoom extents, multiple documents, or the match Hatch properties that did not appear until AutoCAD 2000.

<AutoCAD Historical Nugget> I joined Autodesk during the AutoCAD R14.01 Update codename Pinetop and was an Autodesk customer and product user prior. I was even a customer that was featured on the AutoCAD R14 demo CD and the live launch broadcast beamed around the world to many in movie theaters. </AutoCAD Historical Nugget>

    Have fun!

    AutoCAD HeliCOOL 3D Render Drawing

Helicool I created a fun drawing back during AutoCAD 2007 to show off the mental ray rendering engine that had been added to AutoCAD 2007. Seeing the then updated rendering engine and the power and quality like its fellow Autodesk rendering engines in 3ds max was something to be shown.

When I showed it at one location in Asia people thought I was fooling them, but I showed them step by step and convinced them it was indeed AutoCAD rendering.

    AutoCAD 2009 Rendered HeliCool Drawing

If you have a multi-core machine you can see the number of tiles being rendered match the number of cores.

I have since updated the drawing a wee bit and thought I would throw it out for download so that others can play with it.

AutoCAD Commands Release R12 to 2009

Lee Ambrosius has updated the AutoCAD Command Map on his website for those wanting to search and see the command history since AutoCAD R12 and what has been added, modified, or deprecated through the many years.

This project is near and dear to my heart and was started 10 years ago when I started at Autodesk. I figured surely there must be one master command list with history, but there was not and I set out in my free time to make one. Lee has since gone way beyond the old spreadsheet and PDF format I released back in 1998 with a database driven system and put in a great deal of work and research on his own time.

Tell Us Your AutoCAD Story, Get a FREE Video Camera

Flip Camera Yes, we are giving away free video cameras. The only catch is you need to email a request outlining what you would create a video of and be a user of AutoCAD.

The AutoCAD team wants to see and hear your stories.  We’re giving away FREE Flip Video Cameras to selected people that have an AutoCAD story to tell.  In return, we just ask you to send us a couple of minutes of video (using your new camera) showing us your AutoCAD story.  What kind of story?  That’s up to you.  Mostly, we want to hear how AutoCAD has changed your life, see some cool projects you designed with AutoCAD…that sort of thing.  Be funny, be creative, or be inspiring.  But mostly, just be you.  We’re going to feature a bunch of your videos on the AutoCAD website – it’s going to be fun to see the great things you all do with AutoCAD.

Perhaps a video detailing how many years you have been using AutoCAD and your memories, your workflow, your party invitations that you designed in AutoCAD 2.18, your tricks, your project highlights, or perhaps if you are like me a story about how AutoCAD has changed your life or business or how many kinds of tricks you had played on your fellow AutoCAD users.

To be considered for a free video camera, email autocad.video@autodesk.com.  In the email you must detail who you are, what you do, and what you would record in your AutoCAD video, The number of cameras are limited so be sure to be creative and detailed in your request.

Be funny, be creative, be inspiring --- be yourself!

    Cheers,
    Shaan

    Happy Birthday Autodesk - April 26th, 1982

A HUGE Thank You to John, Duff, and Dan for giving us Autodesk and AutoCAD. For many of us it not only changed an industry but also changed many lives,
While there was a product named Microcad purchased by Autodesk before AutoCAD, it did not become AutoCAD although some incorrectly thought it did.

    Cheers,

AutoCAD Trivia - Pinetop and a Map

AutoCAD Trivia : In my recent posting For AutoCAD Geeks - Command and System Variables Map and Trivia I mentioned AutoCAD R14.01 was code named Pinetop,  and asked what was this reference to, and why?

Nobody wanted to take a guess...

Answer: The codename Pinetop was based on Pinetop Arizona since AutoCAD R14 was code named Sedona.

Just for fun here is a quick Google Map I put together for code names that I know that referenced geographic locations. Many different industries use code names for unreleased or in progress projects and that is definitely true in the software industry. Autodesk has been using code names of products for 25+ years as in some cases the products name is not even finalized. There is no real scientific method nor is there a designated code name person. The code name is usually the result of a product manager and sometimes they are themes like ski resorts, cars, beers, movies, movie characters, Greek mythology, places, and cities. Currently with over 100 active beta and research projects at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com there are so many code names I cannot remember them all and have to refer to my cheat spreadsheet to know what is what and who.

For AutoCAD Geeks - Command and System Variables Map and Trivia

A question in a private myfeedback.autodesk.com discussion forum (we have over 90 projects ongoing during this busiest of season for betas, sign up) I had a question that reminded me about a great resource I helped start but had not looked at in a awhile. It is the Command and System Variable Map for AutoCAD. Impress fellow CAD geeks with the knowledge and if you can try to memorize all the commands...no no no!

I can remember coming up with the list when I first started with Autodesk 10 years ago fresh out of the mechanical designers world to the software industry which was a cultural shock and also during R14.01 code named "Pinetop" and it was like a speeding train passing and me reaching out and grabbing hold of it. I thought naively that there would be a be all end all list of Commands and System Variables, surely there was a master list with a chronological history of new, removed and changed commands. Well there wasn't and so I set out in the wee hours over the course of a month or two and came up with a AutoCAD R12 to AutoCAD R14 Map in a spreadsheet showing Commands and System Variables in a red, green and yellow color scheme indicating removed, added and changed. In its first year which was 1998 it was being downloaded tens of thousands of times and authors and teachers were always asking to use it which of course is why I created it.

After a few years I met a guy Lee Ambrosius who had more energy than me and new AutoCAD inside and out and so I gave him the data and the Map lives on and much more robust and improved from a database thanks to Lee's excellent efforts. Now since late in 2007 Lee too works at Autodesk and works the long hours with little spare time but he has to find another energetic person to keep the Map going or keep doing it himself. ;-)

AutoCAD Command Map AutoCAD R12 to AutoCAD 2008: Command Reference

AutoCAD System Variables Map AutoCAD R12 to AutoCAD 2008: System Variables

AutoCAD Trivia : How many officially documented AutoCAD commands and System Variables "sysvars" when I started the Maps for AutoCAD R12?
Answer: In AutoCAD R12 there were 875 documented Commands and 757 System Variables. There are some Commands and System Variables that were not documented on purpose as they were for internal use only and never intended or supported to be used otherwise. Also there are a couple that may only be in the UI. The count water can get muddied that's for sure but this is the official Autodesk documented numbers.

AutoCAD Trivia : How many documented Commands and System Variables for AutoCAD 2008?
Answer: In AutoCAD 2008 there were 876 documented Commands and 767 System Variables. Yes only one new Command since AutoCAD R12, OK not really as there were many old retired Commands and many new that took their places like ASCTEXT which was retired and remapped in AutoCAD R13 to MTEXT not too mention the changed Command count.

I will be turning my AutoCAD History site into a nice new blog when I get a chance so that it is all indexed nicely and can be searched, indexed and maintained more easily. Shaan's Unofficial AutoCAD History Site I am also considering localized language version of the commands as well and perhaps someday vertical products but that all depends on time. Maybe a wiki someday to manage it in the public domain so people can add, edit or update it for a single list that everyone agrees on.

AutoCAD Trivia : I mentioned AutoCAD R14.01 was code named Pinetop, what was this reference to and why?
Answer: post your answer to this blog post. :-)

    Cheers,
    Shaan

Autodesk MyFeedback Team Booth 900 at AU 2007

Stop by and meet the Autodesk MyFeedback Team if attending Autodesk University 2007 in Las Vegas. We will have booth #900. We will have a great deal of Autodesk 25 year memorabilia as well as holding a clay modeling competition which I am tentatively calling 3 names currently "What you create in Vegas, stays in Vegas", " Weapons of Mass Construction", or "Shape the Future of Autodesk Products", with the last name most likely the tagline. Since modeling clay, playdough, or silly putty is no longer allowed on airlines checked or unchecked we want people to return the clay as a sculpture to our booth for review, study, discussion, and photos. We will give some prizes instead of you getting overly searched by the airport security personnel upon departure. While this is in Vegas, this competition is G rated folks.

Now the answer to who was the mystery person in the photo with me in my post on 10/13/07 "Who is the masked person with me?". Jimmy Bergmark in the comments wins as it was indeed the legendary Mr. John Walker the founder of Autodesk and now the owner of popular website http://www.fourmilab.ch/.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet the founder of Autodesk this summer while I was traveling in Switzerland this summer. He was so very friendly and has a memory like no other person I have met before. It was a CAD Geeks dream come true. I made sure to tell John how much of an impact he made on many of us who started on AutoCAD. I will reveal more details on this exciting visit in the future in this 25th anniversary of Autodesk.

    Looking for a working 286/386

    A photo on Flickr

And preferably with a digitizer. Why, well I am planning on setting this up at Autodesk University for people to run early versions of AutoCAD and see what it was like and how far it has came in 25 years. If you have a old 286/386 with DOS and works please contact me to discuss at shaan@autodesk.com. One of those old 386 laptops would be great as well but it would have to allow a 5 1/2" floppy. :-)

AutoCAD Guru Jimmy Bergmark Interviewed by NOVEDGE the blog

Jimmy Bergmark is definitely an AutoCAD Guru. When I first met Jimmy online years ago I often wondered if he slept as I could email him at any time of the day and he would reply in about 30 minutes from Sweden. I envisioned he had some sort of email alarm that would awaken him.

I love one his quotes  "if AutoCAD hadn’t evolving in this good way I don’t think I still used it as much as I do"

Thanks for mentioning the http://myfeedback.autodesk.com where others can help shape the future of Autodesk products. It wont be much longer and we will be launching the MyFeedback Community 2.0.

Read the good interview of Jimmy by Franco Folini of NOVEDGE.
