Vote for the Autodesk University 2008 Sessions this year

We're doing something new this year—we would like you to help us select the best 500-plus sessions.

We have uploaded all of the sessions (that were submitted by the deadline) to AU 2008 Session site and we need your input. Topics are organized under 19 tracks, which are either an industry or a product.  If you are considering attending AU, please take a few minutes to vote for sessions that you absolutely want to see.
Over the next few weeks, we will review all those submissions and whittle them down to the number we can actually physically accommodate in the Venetian Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Registration for AU will start on August 15th, and one week earlier for AU members.  Class schedules will be available for review by August 1st.
Thank you in advance for helping us select the most interesting classes. The deadline for voting is Saturday, May 3, 2008

AutoCAD Wish List Ballot Results for February 2008

AUGI (Autodesk Users Groups International) has now posted the results of the February 2008 wish list voting cycle for AutoCAD. There are some good ones in there and we appreciate all the submissions. Everyone should get involved in AUGI as it is free, many benefits, tens of thousands of your peers, and you get to enter your wish list items and vote on them in 3 cycles a year. The top ten voted wishes for the year are presented to Autodesk at Autodesk University to work on them. We at Autodesk also grab from the other wish list submissions as well.
The key to success is making sure the customers are heard and we do our very best to implement all the wishes into the products we can.

Now I have to do my last minute packing as I am headed down to Burbank California to provide some training and warped humor to some very well known people from Hollywood in less than an hour. I like to pack at the last minute, not sure why but it always seems to end up like that.

Cheers,
Shaan

AutoCAD 2009 and AutoCAD LT Discussion Forums

Join a great community of yours peers in solving issues and learning new tips and tricks, as well as make some great friends and sometimes watch the humor and egos (TT) at play <g>. The dynamics of discussion forums is usually about someone having a problem motivating them to post so looking at a forum does not give a complete picture of any product as most that are not having problems or questions don't post in the forums unless they are willing to help others.

You can use your web browser or a newsreader (NNTP) to read and post. There are also some really great forums at http://www.augi.com.

Sorry Seattle, no Irish River Dancing from me Tonight

Puget Sound Autodesk Users Group Meeting 2/05

Today and tomorrow I was supposed to be in Seattle but a family emergency needed my attention and I had to cancel the travel. Luckily for the PSAUG meeting tonight Alex Lepeska will be able to stand in and I sent some materials and offered to participate by phone and take the hecklers well deserved insults for not being there as well as answer 2009 product line questions. Wicked Cool Matt Murphy will also be there so they are in great hands and the world famous Matt Murphy Clay Head will remain safe here with me. Heidi Hewett will be taking on more tomorrow at the CAD Camp for me. I am also missing out on time with Robert Bell and trying to get him to mount the Pikes Market brass pig again for a new photo.

I promised I will be back in Seattle to make up for this and besides like I have said many times before I love Seattle and my PSAUG user group friends after all I consider the Pacific Northwest my adopted home region after many years in Oregon. I also heard the weather is nice right now in Seattle. You never get to chose your times for emergencies.

Lookout Seattle Washington, here I come again for AUGI CAD Camp 2008

AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2006AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2007AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2008You cant say you were not warned first. ;-)
This will be my 3rd year presenting at the Seattle AUGI CAD Camp. Seattle CAD Camp will be February 21st, 2008. I am planning something special (not Irish riverdancing) since this is also the week of my birthday and I also want to be invited again in 2009. What can I say, I love Seattle, good coffee, good seafood, AUGI, and of course the local Autodesk user group PSAUG. The bonus is I won't get lost finding the location and have to call Alex, Jamie, or Crystal (that is if it is once again at the Renton Community College). I am hoping (hint hint Jamie Thomas) PSAUG will be holding a meeting around the date so I can attend and chat with the group. I have lived all over and still I call the Northwest home, even though I don't live there anymore. People in the Northwest don't tan, they rust, ok sorry for the old and poor rain joke.

AUGI Seattle CAD Camp 2007

I just uploaded some pictures from last years event as they were on my old photo gallery and I had just not moved them over to my Flickr gallery. I also found a photo of Robert Bell at Pikes Market on the big brass pig in the image search. Sorry Robert...

    São Paulo Brasil CAD Camp

I had a great time yesterday attending and presenting at the São Paulo CAD Camp. AUGI Brasil did a great job as did the host and the Universidade São Judas. I saw so many people that I had known only by email in attendance as well as good Brazilian friends. Some came from as far as Curitiba Brasil by bus to attend and said it was well worth it. I heard from some in attendance that the instructors were top notch. It was also a treat to see my Autodesk 25 years history article translated in the Portuguese AUGIWorld Magazine.

Later in the evening I went to a dinner with instructors and AUGI Brasil hosted by Herbert Ortiz the AUGI Brazil Country Chapter Coordinator and also of OFCDesk LLC at a São Paulo pizza restaurant which was excellent. São Paulo is well known for its pizza. I will post more once I catch up on email and relocate to another part of São Paulo today. This city is HUGE and the heavy rain currently makes getting anywhere a difficult and long task. I have uploaded a few photos from CAD Camp in my Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/.

Shaan is in São Paulo Brasil

I made it to Brazil (Brasil) this morning and am now getting situated and ready for CAD Camp this week in the worlds 3rd largest city. If you are in São Paulo and would like to meet please email me at shaan@autodesk.com but I will only be here for a few days. It is nice coming from the cold winter snow of Utah to the summer warmth of Brazil.  I will be posting photos during the trip and CAD Camp to my Flickr photo site http://www.flickr.com/photos/btl/.

I am still recovering from the overall excellent experience of Autodesk University 2007 which was the largest and best AU so far.

    AutoCAD Turns 25

AUGIWorld 11-2007 For those that did not see it at AU or in their mailbox I was placed on the cover of the current November 2007 AUGIWorld Magazine with an interview about Autodesk\AutoCAD history over the past 25 years in the issue. Some AU attendees even came and got the issue autographed although I am not sure if they were just having fun and goofing.

You can read the issue online in electronic format at the following link.

AU 2007 - Friday Goodbye AU 2007, Start Planning for AU 2008

Welcome to Las Vegas!Thursday Night AU 80s themed party was HUGE and a blast. There were so many people, food , beverages, old 80s video games, pool tables, activities, 2 comedians, 1 chain saw juggler, and the band Tainted Love. After the party I went out with coworkers and customers to Tao upper floor which was a really cool place then for breakfast for the annual chicken and waffles with maple syrup at the Grand Lux located in the Venetian.

Welcome to the AU ExperienceAutodesk University 2007 came to a final end today after the largest attendance of around and it could be a coincidence but when AU ended it got very cold, clouds covered the sky, and rain started here in Las Vegas.

    • The clay modeling submissions and conversations about the Autodesk 25 year memorabilia at the Autodesk MyFeedback booth.
    • Lynn chasing me around the event floor after the comedian used my photos to joke about Lynn's hair over the past.
    • Luciana, Assis coming from Brazil and Luciana being out of Brazil for the first time and Vegas no less must be overwhelming and paint a inaccurate view of what the United States is like.
    • Laughing till I cried with the group at La Scena when discussing the weird infomercial's being shown on the hotel TV channel 5.
    • Not answering my wake up call and security showing up at my door to make sure I was fine. My phone did not ring as it was on the wrong line.
    • My Blackberry getting fried and not working much of the time although Martyn Day also suffered a similar problem when he lost the navigation ball on his Blackberry.
    • The Venetian club Tao and the upstairs environment and view down the strip.
    • Being on a panel during Yoshi Hondas CAD Management Town Hall with such esteemed co panelists including David Harrington, Tom Conti, Jamie Casile, Daniel Herbert, Danny Counts, Veronica Lamb, and even the infamous Matt Murphy Clay Head Sculpture sat on the panel in front of the attendees but never answered a single question.
    • Stan running into me with the scooter.
    • The AUGI Top DAUG Competition
    • The 360 degree high definition system during the keynote and showing of code name Metropolis. I sure whish I could have that system for gaming. ;-)
    • Jeff Jeff Kowalski Autodesk CTO and his presentation keynote as it was cool and his presentation style was reminiscent of a smooth Steve Jobs.
    • Lynn Allen's picture from the 1980s that she showed to over 7000 people.
    • Having my face and interview on the AUGIWorld Magazine cover.

I head back to Utah tomorrow morning then to Brazil on Monday for CAD Camp and then onto Peru for some Amazon jungle trekking and photos. I need to also get my voice back and caught up on email, pack, and process and backup photos.

AU 2007 - AUGI TOP DAUG Winner

AU 2007 - Tuesday Afternoon..Photos, Certification Guide, and R14 Flip Flops

Carl Bass Autodesk CEOfuseproject,Fouder Yves Behar_AU 2007 - Welcome to MetropolisI attended the Morning AU Welcome with presentations from Lynn Allen, Carl Bass Autodesk CEO, Jonathan Knowles Director of Cool Things at Autodesk, and Jeff Kowalski Autodesk CTO. There was some really cool things shown and it all culminated with a grand finale of showing of future ideas and concepts live such as Metropolis which was shown live like Google Earth for the Deign World on 20 High Definition screens powered by 40 HD projectors in a full 360 degrees around the audience of over 7500 people. This high definition bliss was all produced by a Tablet PC controlling 20 high end screaming HP PCs live and drilling right down to the query of where a certain type of tree was in a city and a BIM model. I posted some photos from the event although lighting has been difficult. I also posted some of the photos I took yesterday when I snuck behind the scenes and watched Metropolis for the first time with my jaw wide open as Brian Mathews said "what do you think" I don't think I could say anything for a minute as I was speechless. So many things were racing through my mind seeing all that live spatial metaverse/multiverse rich an juicy design data on the 360 degree high def screens even including the question of "I wonder if I could sneak in late at night and play Halo on this system".

The HiveUltimate Gaming SystemThe HivePerhaps it was coincidence but when I visited this computer area they called "The Hive" and I attempted to check my BlackBerry 8800 for email it started to freak out and I can no longer use it except to answer phone calls. Coincidence or not perhaps the multiple gigabit wireless connections from the 20 high end PCs freaked out my poor defenseless BlackBerry.

__-2In preparing to transport some of my Autodesk 25 year anniversary artifacts to my booth for display I noticed that I have one extra pair of vintage and unused AutoCAD R14 flip flop sandals. Sure I could auction them on eBay and retire on a small island with a beer (ok not really) but I figure I can give them to wither the winner of this years AUGI Top DOG AutoCAD competition, the longest AutoCAD user in attendance with proof, or a person that is current active Autodesk MyFeedback participant and willing to wear them in a pair of shorts at the beer bust and the rest of the week and spread the word about Autodesk MyFeedback and give hugs to those who ask. Still have not decided on which flip flop giveaway criteria but I will. I should also mention the bonus is these flip flop sandals leave the words "AutoCAD" "R14" imprint in the sand when you walk. These excellent R14 Flip Flops will be on display at booth 900 along with Weapons of Mass Construction aka modeling clay for a fun challenge named "What's Created in Vegas, Stays in Vegas" but this is a G rated Challenge folks (speaking directly to Melanie's husband Mike Perry). I also have 2 brand spanking new AutoCAD 2008 Certification Study Guides to give Away among other nice freebies.

I wanted to thank Robin Capper a New Zealand Kiwi blogger, a friend, and nice guy. He came up to me after the presentation and he read one of my greatest losses this year was when all my luggage was stolen by a so-called Costa Rican policeman. Sure I lost camera gear and a ton of clothes and goodies but my New Zealand All Blacks jersey from Kiwi Mike Burke was in there. Robin gave me a replacement from New Zealand.

A photo on FlickrI finally got to meet a few people in person that I have not met such as Autodesk PR Paul Davis.

The AU Photo Gallery is at http://www.flickr.com/groups/au2007/ please feel free to join the free Flickr and share your AU 2007 photos with others. Subscribe to a feed of stuff on this page... Subscribe to photos from the Autodesk University 2007 pool – Latest | geoFeed | KML

I guess I could go on and on but that will have to wait as I need to get down and set up the Autodesk MyFeedback Booth as it will be opening after the AUGI Meeting tonight for the annual Beer Bust.

    Shaan

Autodesk University Unplugged (un-conference) is Alive

Message from AU master Joseph Wurcher on this great idea.

"Most of you may already know that this year, AU makes its first attempt at an un-conference – which we call AU Unplugged.  We strongly believe that attendees have much to share with the greater AU community and we encourage grass-root participation in AU by all AU attendees.  This year, we will provide the space to move some of those great hallway conversations into a class room and have more folks benefit from it.

To learn more about AU Unplugged check out this posting.

    "AU Unplugged!" is Ready!

Some of the topic that haven submitted:

    • How does CAD Management differ with the size of a company
    • Are you using AutoCAD Architecture (ADT) only as AutoCAD?
    • BIM Visionaries Panel
    • Let's Talk LT!
    • Multiple Users and multiple modeling strategies in one project... "

Get Involved Shaping the Future of Autodesk Products and Get Off the Sidewalk

feedback I often stumble across a report of something someone would like to improve in AutoCAD or Autodesk products posted in a forum or blog or even down in a nested comment. Perhaps it is venting, ranting, perhaps it is wishful thinking or an expectation that the members of the small Autodesk product teams can find these items and enact change. Please please please, if you find bugs or have wish list items you want to get acted on make sure to get them to the people that develop the product. If we do not know about it you are likely to not see it addressed in a future release of the product. If you get involved and report it you just may see it in a future release as well as quite possibly get a deeper understanding of the why it has been that way if it were intentional behavior.

This is similar to another peeve of mine and that is some that publish bug lists on their blogs, articles, email newsletters etc. don't report the bugs to the software vendor. Where's the benefit of that withholding or delay to fellow users of that software? It makes for more pain as some will compile this list over time and later publish. It can be a missed opportunity for the software vendor to fix the issue or even know about the issue for research.

    For Autodesk Software:

Report bugs and product comments and suggestions to the actual product teams: Product Feedback or if you are a Autodesk Subscription customer, log the product support issues online.

Nominate Wish List Items: http://www.augi.com membership is free and it is made up of fellow Autodesk product users. There is an AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor wish list and you can nominate and vote on wish list items which are provided to Autodesk by AUGI. The voting helps know the priority of items.

Below is my reply to a comment on another blog responding to a person I know very well and respect Matt Stachoni. Matt posted a lengthy commentary about what he would like changed in AutoCAD yet he posted this on a non Autodesk site in a comment to a blog post but luckily I spotted it. I have been trying to get Matt involved in beta testing, test drives, and usability and other customer feedback projects for years and I am aware he is busy but he had the time to post a lengthy comment in one little corner of the Internet, right? ;-)

"Autodesk is always listening and trying to improve. Some things irk us as well. It is important to mention some things just appear different or clear and easy from the outside looking in but that may not always be the case as I have seen both sides as I have been a customer and AutoCAD Team member.

I am shocked that Matt and Ralph could only come up with these lists as there are so many things that could be changed and implemented better or different for a 25 year young product that is used in so many ways. Some items can also take time as well in addition to planning and customer feedback loops to make sure that we are on track and what they asked for.

In my opinion it is all about trying to accommodate everyone and but realizing it is difficult to hit the bulls eye 100% of the time or satisfy everyone all of the time, but you must keep trying.

So you realize we have many more years of product improvement. We constantly crawl the blogs, forums, emails, surveys, user events, etc and other customer feedback locations to stumble upon feedback but please make sure to get your feedback to Autodesk so we don't miss it. So be sure to get involved in the process and not just yell from the sidewalk while the parade passes.

AUGI membership is free and made up of fellow product users and allows and encourages you to nominate your own pet peeves and vote on changes to AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.

OK now go nominate some items as well as get involved in actively shaping the future of Autodesk products! :-)

Not sure if this is a new saying but I wrote it at the moment and it made perfect sense to me.

Get involved in the process, not just yell from the sidewalk while the parade passes.

    Cheers,

Your Wish is Our COMMAND - AUGI Top Ten June 2007 Voting Results

Thanks to the hard work of Brenda Richardson as the AUGI AutoCAD Wish List Manager and all the other volunteers helping and those that submitted nominations as well as voted we have a June 2007 AUIGI AutoCAD Wish List Final Top Ten.

A few comments are some of the the items are partially already there but perhaps not to the level of the nominator such as multi-processor (multi-threaded) support as some of AutoCAD's features already take advantage of them and there are work-arounds for Fading Xref layers by locking them with the command LAYISO and LAYLOCKFADECTL system variable in AutoCAD 2008. We on the AutoCAD Team will be reviewing these items and seeing what we can accomplish and also provide an update at Autodesk University when AUGI officially presents the Wish List typically to the Autodesk Vice President of the division.
