Vote for the Autodesk University 2008 Sessions this year

We're doing something new this year—we would like you to help us select the best 500-plus sessions.

We have uploaded all of the sessions (that were submitted by the deadline) to AU 2008 Session site and we need your input. Topics are organized under 19 tracks, which are either an industry or a product.  If you are considering attending AU, please take a few minutes to vote for sessions that you absolutely want to see.
Over the next few weeks, we will review all those submissions and whittle them down to the number we can actually physically accommodate in the Venetian Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Registration for AU will start on August 15th, and one week earlier for AU members.  Class schedules will be available for review by August 1st.
Thank you in advance for helping us select the most interesting classes. The deadline for voting is Saturday, May 3, 2008

Scale List Cleanup Utility for AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD 2009

Updated version of the Scale List Cleanup Utility April 26th 2008
This Scale List Cleanup Utility repairs a problem with files that contain excess scales. image This utility will soon be posted live to the Autodesk support site http://support.autodesk.com as it has completed beta testing with customers on http://myfeedback.autodesk.com

This tool was developed in response to your customer feedback.
Thank you.

Description of Problem

When a file contains excess scales, performance may be negatively affected. Eventually, the file may become unusable. To use the file, some scales must be removed. This utility repairs affected files by removing excess scales.

NOTE: Nested external references (xrefs) may produce excess scales. To correct this problem, install AutoCAD 2008 Service Pack 1 or corresponding service packs for AutoCAD-based products. The Scale List Cleanup Utility repairs files affected before the necessary service pack was installed.

Affected Products

  • AutoCAD® 2008-based products, including DWG TrueView™ 2008
  • AutoCAD® 2009-based products, including DWG TrueView 2009

Installation Instructions

To install the Scale List Cleanup Utility

This utility has to be installed in the AutoCAD 2008 or AutoCAD 2009 installation folders.

You must have administrative privileges on your Microsoft® Windows® operating system to complete installation.

  1. Based on your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit), download the appropriate self-extracting executable file.
  2. Select a folder.
  3. Extract files to the selected folder.
  4. Navigate to the folder and copy CleanupScales.exe, CleanupScalesRes.dll, and CleanupScales.html to the installation directory of your AutoCAD-based product.
NOTE: To run this utility you must launch CleanupScales.exe from the installation directory of your AutoCAD-based product.

Repair Affected Files

To repair affected files
  1. Close all affected files. Open affected files will not be repaired.
  2. Launch the Scale List Cleanup Utility from the installation folder of your AutoCAD-based product.
  3. Under Files to Clean, select affected files.
  4. If desired, select Maintain Visual Fidelity for Annotative Objects.
NOTE: This option allows you to maintain visual fidelity for annotative objects when they are viewed in AutoCAD 2007 or earlier releases and corresponds to the SAVEFIDELITY system variable. Annotative objects may have multiple scale representations. When you select this option, annotative objects are decomposed and scale representations are saved (in an anonymous block) to separate layers, which are named based on their original layer and appended with a number.
  5. Under New Scale List, in the drop-down list, select a scale list template.
NOTE: Each scale list template contains a different scale list. When you run this utility, unused scales are deleted from files and the scale list from the selected template is applied.
  6. If desired, change the scale list threshold.
NOTE: The scale list threshold determines the minimum number of scales a file must contain in order to be repaired. The default scale list threshold is 50. Files that contain fewer scales than the scale list threshold will not be repaired. To change the scale list threshold, on the New scale list panel, enter a number in the Scale List Threshold field.
  7. Click OK. Repaired files are saved in the same format last saved in.

Cheers,
Shaan

Autodesk Impression 2 for Download by Autodesk Subscription Customers

image Turn your DWG and DWF files into an impressive hand stylized rendering without having to break out those smelly ink markers, pencils, or talent. Unlike other methods you can update your rendered image when your DWG file changes instead of having to start all over again in the process. Images stylized in Impression provide another way to see the project instead of a exact 3D crisp rendering which communicates to some as a completed design, the 2D or 3D DWG files in Impression can give an impression of in process, quality style, and still pre-construction thinking and convey a different impression and much faster. Give it a try as you will see how fun and easy it is to impress others and sometimes it is hard to tell which was a watercolored, pencil sketched or inked marker rendering from what you output with Autodesk Impression.

The products that get this Autodesk Impression download benefit are:

AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map 3D, AutoCAD MEP, AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite,AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite, AutoCAD Revit Structure Suite, Revit Architecture Revit MEP, and Revit Structure.

Impression 2 will initially be available in English only.

Frequently Asked Questions About DWG

All that is required is completing the download form. The file download is a whopping 193MB but to be able to have much of the functionality of AutoCAD for viewing, plotting, and file conversion it takes that much. So for free you get 100% DWG and the AutoCAD core you can rely and trust for those that don't need a full CAD to view or convert DWG files but want full data and visual fidelity and compatibility.

Round Two - More AutoCAD 2009, other Autodesk 2009 Product Links, and Autodesk World Press Day

I made it back from San Francisco for the Autodesk World Press Days but took 4 hours longer due to an engine not starting on the plane (commercial airline), then after an hour and a half of them working on it we took off headed for Salt Lake city only to circle for over an hour over the Western Utah desert while the Salt Lake City airport was closed due to heavy snow. While checking ion for the flight I was talking with a few people about my travel curse passed onto me by my former boss Shawn Gilmore. My travel curse has been fairly unique in many respects like North Korea firing misses over the China Sea while I was above, trapped in Queenstown New Zealand, luggage being lost and once right before meeting Autodesk founder John Walker in Switzerland, jets loss of fuel while over the Atlantic and an emergency landing in New York, computers stolen, police raid on a jet for a passenger smoking in the bathroom, several inches of snow in Tokyo before I landed and it does not snow there too often, stuck for 7 hours in custom while Brazilian customs agents went on strike, detained in Canada only to be told a few hours later "it must have been an American security database issue", Been in too many storm of the century examples like in Vancouver last year when it seemed the world and all trees were being rearranged and all power out and water contaminated, and many more unfortunately. People now ask me to email them before I travel to allow them to escape the region or avoid the same flights.

Autodesk World Press DaysI had a few sessions and meetings yesterday. I had a good discussion with Ralph Grabowski, ran into Martyn Day for only a second but long enough to get his picture, attended a lunch presentation from an auto designer from China's NAC. On the way to the airport I shared a cab with a journalist and had a great discussion about the worlds eroding infrastructure such as bridges and utilities and how their continued lack of attention after construction will result in a poor future.

Autodesk World Press Days

Autodesk World Press Days Autodesk World Press Days Autodesk World Press Days Autodesk World Press Days-

One thing I took away from the World Press Days that I was not really aware of was how critical NavisWorks was to the large projects  in the entire AEC Industry and BIM projects to save time, resources, and costs by showing a project in 4D where time is considered in the 3D project so you can plan project flow or all design data in 3D for collision detection and multi discipline coordination. NavisWorks was shown in most of the AEC presentations from large buildings and their piping or overall construction to the new span of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.

    Autodesk 2009 Product Links

The news, highlights, and opinions are now starting to flow on the web. Once the products start shipping and people start using the products I am sure there will be much more information. Currently only partners, beta testers from http://myfeedback.autodesk.com, and Autodesk employees have been using the pre-release products. Also most of the CAD industry press and journalists are in San Francisco for the Autodesk World Press Days, so once many of them get back online or printing I am sure there will be articles from them.

The 2009 Products Including AutoCAD 2009

AutoCAD 2009 Splash Image     Today the announcement of the next release of AutoCAD 2009 code named "Raptor" (like a hawk) as well as many other products have been announced from Autodesk World Press Day. The products will start shipping later but are not currently. I will begin to post on the features in more depth as well as link and trackbacks to those doing the same as there is a huge CAD blogging community now. The official new products content on the Autodesk.com website and public discussion groups will go live in the next few weeks with further details as the launch begins.

During beta I think the largest hurdle was getting used to the User Interface changes of the new ribbon. Most got used to it after using it and it is more customizable than the standard MS Office ribbon and can also be turned off. The Release Candidate that was last delivered to beta sites has now been updated based on their feedback and reporting and we wish to sincerely thank them all for the active feedback and helping shape the future of the products.

AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2006AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2007AUGI CAD CAMP Seattle 2-2008You cant say you were not warned first. ;-)
This will be my 3rd year presenting at the Seattle AUGI CAD Camp. Seattle CAD Camp will be February 21st, 2008. I am planning something special (not Irish riverdancing) since this is also the week of my birthday and I also want to be invited again in 2009. What can I say, I love Seattle, good coffee, good seafood, AUGI, and of course the local Autodesk user group PSAUG. The bonus is I won't get lost finding the location and have to call Alex, Jamie, or Crystal (that is if it is once again at the Renton Community College). I am hoping (hint hint Jamie Thomas) PSAUG will be holding a meeting around the date so I can attend and chat with the group. I have lived all over and still I call the Northwest home, even though I don't live there anymore. People in the Northwest don't tan, they rust, ok sorry for the old and poor rain joke.

    AUGI Seattle CAD Camp 2007

I just uploaded some pictures from last years event as they were on my old photo gallery and I had just not moved them over to my Flickr gallery. I also found a photo of Robert Bell at Pikes Market on the big brass pig in the image search. Sorry Robert...

      Autodesk will be closed

Autodesk will be closed for the annual week of rest and the holidays from the 22nd of December until the 2nd of January. Contacting Autodesk employees during this time may be difficult as we spend time with our families and prepare for the new year.

I sincerely appreciate everyone's feedback over the past years and look forward to an even better new year. Thank you for reading and replying to this blog as it has been a pleasure. I welcome any feedback or suggestions to improve or content ideas for the tens of thousands that read this blog daily. I have tried to keep the topics varied from Autodesk and AutoCAD to technology and photography as well to keep things fun and informative appealing to this wide and diverse audience.

A blog is like a conversation and not really for press release type of text words and tone but a personal view and opinions. The personal expression and tone are what makes a blog really different from just a web page. If the tone or words don't sound like a someone really sitting down with you over a cup of coffee, then the personal feel is lost. If I get out of bounds or wander too much please let me know so I can adjust my course but know that with this blog you get the real me good bad or indifferent it is me along with my opinions, bias, my passion for design and Autodesk products as well as geek gadgets, and of coarse my warped sense of humor which sometimes does not translate into other languages too well.

I have some big and exciting plans for the new year 2008 and this blog.

Have a very happy holidays, Merry Christmas, and a safe and great New Years.

      Sincerely,

Now when you crash an Autodesk product not only  is the important details are sent to Autodesk and later an email notification if you entered your email address when a fix is available, but now you can see/search immediately if there is a fix for this issue. Unlike many other software companies that simply rely on a default crash reporting mechanism that may just send out your feedback and the valuable details into a black hole or to Microsoft who cannot fix the problem and offers no help of any kind, Autodesk knows how important it is to correct any issues we can with our products. This is a very important project and resulting in more stable and higher performing Autodesk products which results in happier and more productive customers.

I have wrote many blog posts over the years on CER and CIP explaining the process and why you should participate as it helps you get resolutions to issues you have been encountering or with CIP your command usage of AutoCAD 2008 helps develop a greater understanding by Autodesk on how our products are used and how to improve.

      Autodesk Customer Involvement Program (CIP)

ADSK-CIPNow with AutoCAD 2008 Customer Involvement Program (CIP) a customer can elect to send anonymous usage data we will get even better. We hope that customers will enable anonymous CIP data reporting to help us understand how they are using our products so that we can make even more solid decisions based on that data.

Please make sure if you do happen to crash (we hope you don't) to be sure to send in the CER report each time it occurs so our teams can research the culprit. And no, there are no file names, bank accounts, DNA details, covert black helicopters circling when you send the data or people checking your serial numbers and knocking on your doors. In fact all the data is on your machine unencrypted before sending if you like to snoop and verify for yourselves.

      Happy Holidays,

Autodesk Products and Microsoft Windows Vista White Paper

      Greetings from Brasil!
I was sent the following white paper dealing in-depth with Autodesk products and Microsoft Windows Vista support. It will soon be on the Autodesk website but I have provided a copy for you now.

      image

      "Introduction
With the introduction of Microsoft® Windows Vista, Autodesk® customers have another choice of operating systems. Whether a company opts to adopt Windows Vista, Windows® XP, or another supported operating system (OS), Autodesk applications deliver exceptional performance across the board.

To ensure the superlative performance of Autodesk applications on Microsoft operating systems, Autodesk has worked closely with Microsoft over the past 12 years, collaborating on product development, bringing innovative technologies to market, and exceeding customer expectations. As a Microsoft Platinum Partner, a Global ISV, and a member of Microsoft’s Manufacturing ISV program, Autodesk’s close relationship with Microsoft enhances Autodesk’s ability to provide products that raise the bar for innovation and transcend operating systems. Whether companies use Microsoft Vista or Microsoft XP operating systems, Autodesk is committed to delivering solutions that provide the functionality its customers have come to expect.

The close collaborations between Autodesk and Microsoft result in simultaneous support for new technologies, as evidenced by the compatibility of Autodesk applications with Windows Vista and Microsoft’s adoption of the Autodesk DWF file format as a native part of Windows Vista. In addition, Autodesk has chosen the Direct3D graphics application programming interface (API) developed by Microsoft over the alternative OpenGL API. By aligning with Microsoft on Direct3D, Autodesk is delivering a highly positive experience to customers using its products with Windows Vista. For more information on how Direct3D enhances the user experience for graphics-intensive applications, see page 15 of this paper.

While Autodesk believes that Windows Vista will become the industry-standard OS over time, the Autodesk 2008 product line increases design efficiency and cost savings for customers using any supported OS. Companies that plan to deploy Windows Vista this year may have questions about whether their specific Autodesk applications are compatible with Windows Vista and what kinds of performance changes they may expect. This paper addresses Vista compatibility and performance on a product by-product basis, as well as highlights the new functionality of the Autodesk 2008 products. Simply skip to the appropriate product section for information on the following:

AU 2007 - Friday Goodbye AU 2007, Start Planning for AU 2008

Welcome to Las Vegas!Thursday Night AU 80s themed party was HUGE and a blast. There were so many people, food , beverages, old 80s video games, pool tables, activities, 2 comedians, 1 chain saw juggler, and the band Tainted Love. After the party I went out with coworkers and customers to Tao upper floor which was a really cool place then for breakfast for the annual chicken and waffles with maple syrup at the Grand Lux located in the Venetian.

Welcome to the AU ExperienceAutodesk University 2007 came to a final end today after the largest attendance of around and it could be a coincidence but when AU ended it got very cold, clouds covered the sky, and rain started here in Las Vegas.
