Yesterday many big hearted employees in the Autodesk Lake Oswego Oregon office took time to assemble 3D printed Phoenix prosthetic hands designed using Autodesk’s own Fusion 360 in the e-NABLE Buildathon. The hands are destined with a personal card for children in war torn Syria by e-NABLE. Autodesk employees around the world donate their personal time year around and Autodesk whole heartily supports this and matches the time and donations and also has a philanthropic foundation with the Autodesk Foundation to further show the commitment and commitment to Imagine, Design, and Create a Better World. During the month of June Autodesk has focused on a Global Month of Impact and organized several volunteer projects in offices.
e-NABLE Community Foundation is an Autodesk Foundation Grantee. They are a dedicated international network of passionate volunteers using 3D printing technology to design, deliver, and distribute free upper-limb prosthetics to children and underserved populations around the world.

It is the first day of summer and coincidently the first day of my sabbatical. Autodesk is one of the top employers in North America and recognizing employees work life balance and providing us the time to relax, reflect, recharge ever 4 years is an amazing benefit. This will be my fourth sabbatical since joining Autodesk a little over 18 years ago. What do I have planned, not much except spending time with my family, my friends, and the great outdoors camping in a hammock every chance I get. I will post here regularly to prevent the light from going out and also keep myself busy.

Recently I edited a 3D model and created a quick video in Autodesk ReMake (formerly Autodesk Memento.) The 3D model was generated using Autodesk ReCap 360 Pro from photos taken last month using an UAS/drone in the hot windy Trona Pinnacles near Death Valley California. The ability to create 3D textured models from aerial photos opens up many possibilities in design, construction, and site mapping. Autodesk has released specific features in ReCap 360 Pro named Fly that allow you to create point clouds, geolocated maps, incorporate ground control, and automatically create orthographic images.

This week 9 of us from the Lake Oswego Autodesk office went and volunteered to sort food at the local Oregon Food Bank. We sorted 6872 pounds of chilled goods which is the equivalent of about 5727 meals. Autodesk strongly encourages their employees to get involved in causes and to volunteer around the year and this month is organizing projects in each of the offices around the world that employees can get involved with.
I challenge all of you to volunteer in your community and help create a better world.

Future of design
Smaller engineering teams have the advantage of being more agile, due to necessity. Their lack of resources require maximum efficiency. With today’s technology, these teams can leverage shared manufacturing resources like 3D print on demand and shared manufacturing facilities. The internet and secure networks make it possible to access shared engineering resources to fill whatever gaps in skills or specialties.
Integrated cloud solutions and subscription pricing models help give the smaller companies access to the high powered tools, typically only affordable to larger players with enterprise deals. Smaller companies don’t have to deal with capital expenditure that come with maintaining high end software and solutions, thus not resulting in depreciation and lower “sunk” costs. Pay-as-you-need software gives them the ability to leverage shared software resources, and lowers risk, which smaller engineering teams simply can’t afford.

The goal of this research project is to develop a comprehensive innovation methodology comprised of new innovation techniques that are both powerful and practical. The purpose is to help people and organizations create real innovations that positively impact their organizations and the world.
Leveraging 3.4 Million Years of R&D
These innovation techniques — that are currently being used at Autodesk, by dozens of Autodesk customers, across Silicon Valley, and in 12+ countries around the world — are derived from an ongoing 10-year research project that systematically examines the greatest 1,000 innovations in human history over the past 3.4 million years. We start with the stone hand axe (the world’s first innovation), study great innovations across history (like democracy and the printing press), and continue up to current day innovations such as the Internet, microfinance, and the Tesla. To date, we have studied 350 innovations.
Discovering the True DNA of Innovation
Building on this extensive research, Autodesk has identified a previously undiscovered set of common characteristics among all true innovations — a kind of “Innovation DNA” — that has led to the creation of new innovation techniques. They are easy to learn, teach, and apply, even in organizations that have traditionally been relatively non-innovative; and they have proven extremely effective for both experienced innovators and people with minimal innovation expertise.

The lakes and mountains have thawed.
The smell of burnt hot dogs and hamburgers waft through the air in the evening followed by smores. The smell of bacon fills the campgrounds in the morning which combined with the sunrise and nature is pure beauty.
The feeling of sunburns and mosquito bites.
Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere. It was 100 degrees in normally cool and moist Portland Oregon in the past few days. It was so hot here that we on the building events council (aka Ministry of Mischief) decided to hold a surprise popup ice cream event in the office to cool down employees.

I have a sabbatical this summer and planning so many fun trips outdoors camping, swimming, and hiking, as well as some volunteering projects. I hope you have some fun things on your summer calendar planned.
The United States is facing an infrastructure crisis as our roads and bridges are aging and exceeding capacity.
“Last December, US Dept. of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Foxx launched the Smart City Challenge in response to the Beyond Traffic draft report, which revealed that our nation’s aging infrastructure is not equipped to deal with a dramatically growing population in regions throughout the country.”
On Thursday, June 9 at 2:00pm ET the mayors of the seven finalist cities: Austin Texas , Columbus Ohio, Denver Colorado, Kansas City Missouri, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Portland Oregon, and San Francisco California with make their final pitch for why their city should be selected as the winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge. Wi=The winning city will receive up to $50 million from the USDOT including Autodesk technology to help them design and build integrated and innovative transportation solutions in their city.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx
I have lived and worked in both San Francisco and Portland and can attest to the transportation pains in these cities. Is it selfish to hope that Portland wins and they focus the efforts on transportation improvements and road solution between my house and work and also to Portland's Eastside restaurants, music venues, and bars? Updating our aging infrastructure with the latest in design and technology solutions will help reduce wasted time, wasted fuel, pollution, and safety problems.
I wanted to share and highlight one of our amazing tech previews for Revit users that is getting great feedback in our Autodesk Feedback Community where Autodesk pre-release alpha/betas and Autodesk Labs projects are managed. Project Expo brings Revit models to life in an interactive real-time environment on desktop, mobile, the web, or VR.

Twenty-five year veteran architect, Heather Johnston of PLACE architect, ltd., told Autodesk that “trying to get the images that we produce to really reflect the kind of energy and spirit and quality of light and quality of experience that I can see in my mind, that’s an ongoing puzzle. That’s been a dilemma for architects since Vitruvius.”
Working in Autodesk Fusion 360 today I created a simple concept for a flower vase. The idea was for two separate chambers to join at the top, like joining two lives or mixing two things together. I used two different glass materials with a blend at the seam. I am sure that when complete I could 3D print the vase.

Autodesk colleague Maurice Conti the Director of Strategic Innovation recently visited my special Pacific Wonderland of Portland Oregon to speak at the TEDx Portland event on “The Future of Human Augmentation.” Maurice explains how design and interaction with computational systems and AI will greatly impact all of us. Maurice is an awesome teammate as well as a very creative person that doesn’t just think out side the box, but he lights the box on fire with rocket fuel and whisky and then steps into his teleporter to visit the future.
“Welcome to the Augmented Age where your natural human capabilities will be augmented by computational systems will help you think, robotics systems that help you make,and a digital nervous system that connects you far beyond your natural senses.”
