Three AUGI CAD Camps Scheduled for me in 2007, so far

I hope to meet many of you this year at events and to kick off the AUGI season for me are 3 locations.  Fellow Autodesk team members of mine will be doing some of the other locations like CAD Camp veterans Eric "Captain Hawaii" Stover, Heidi Hewett, Doug Cochran, Todd Hunter of Autodesk Impression fame, and Abhi Singh. CAD Camps are the smaller sibling of Autodesk University with some great training and instructors put together by AUGI a 60,000+ member independent Autodesk product user group (your peers) at a very low price.

  • Seattle, WA USA- February 22nd A PSAUG user group meeting the night prior.
  • Salt Lake City, UT USA - April 26th. Short commute for me of about 10 miles.
  • Sao Paulo Brazil - May 22nd. I simply cannot wait to see my friends back in Sao Paulo and Brazil.

Weird that I so far have 3 locations all starting with "s".

For more information and to register see www.cadcamp.com

Even my funny accented AUGI friend Mike Perry noticed I will be starting my CAD Camp 2007 tour in Seattle.
Catch Heidi Hewett and Shaan Hurley at upcoming AUGI CAD Camps in 2007

Other AUGI CAD Camp locations are planned and chances are one may come near your town.

I want to be a Autodesk Impression Blockhead Too!

I saw that Lisa and others on the Autodesk Impression Team team had their photos taken and made into Autodesk Impression blocks ala entourage. I am envious, I guess that makes me either lazy or a geek, ok maybe both.

Entourage - Its not just an HBO original

I figured I could create a quick one myself freehand in Impression in the meantime although I am no artist and not on my TabletPC currently.

OK, maybe not... HELP I need a new blog image of me. :-)

Autodesk Impression Technical Preview page on Autodesk Labs or get more involved in the product through Autodesk MyFeedback.

Congratulations to Mark Kiker

Mark's CADDManager.com blog turned 300,000 views old yesterday and over 29,000 visitors. Congratulations Mark, who said CAD Managers can be celebrated from time to time instead of despised for enforcing standards. :-)

Yes, They are a Funny and Creative Team

I have worked with the Autodesk Impression team since the beginning of their project, but something tells me they might have been testing far too much when looking at inked renderings using markers. Actually it is a tongue in cheek site to grab peoples attention. It certainly grabbed mine when I stumbled across it and I got a good laugh out of it as well. The real ink look to the web sites layout was also very creative, like someone would really make their HTML web page tables from scanned areas colored with a marker. "No Stain, No Gain".

A Quarter Century of Autodesk Today

On this day 25 years ago on January 30th, 1982 a small group of people held an initial meeting to organize what became Autodesk.

A sincere thank you John Walker for all that he and Autodesk has done for computing and people such as architects and designers around the world to help shape what we have now. If you look around you, many of the things you might see built and designed by man in the past 20+ years may have been designed by people using Autodesk products.

More Autodesk History:
http://myfeedback.autodesk.com/history/area51.htm

On this day 25 years ago:

  • The top single was Oh Julie by Shakin' Stevens and Canadian funny guys Bob And Doug McKenzie's hit "Take Off" was at #9
  • E Bowell discovers asteroid 2602 Moore in a small main belt asteroid. It is named after Patrick Moore, the TV astronomer.
  • Heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne was playing at the Sports Arena in Toledo Ohio
  • Rosalynn Sumners won the US female Figure Skating championship
  • Absolutely nothing happened in most places... ;-)

Where is the birthday cake? :-)

Autodesk Impression Technical Preview 3 Released to Autodesk Labs for Download

Autodesk Labs http://labs.autodesk.com/
http://labs.autodesk.com/Impressionlanding.html
There is a new version of Autodesk Impression now available for download today January 17th, 2007. There have been many updates based on feedback received from previous Technical preview users and current beta customers enrolled in the beta at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com. Some of the biggest updates have been to the user interface "UI" like the Layers palette and Dashboard. Also included now is the cool feature that provides the ability to update your Impression drawing file when the CAD geometry in which it was based on changes. You can import files from some of the following DWG, DWF, BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, DCX, PSD, PNG, TGA, TIFF. Yes you can use a DWF file to start styling it in Impression and then save it as a DWF when completed or save as Impression format IRF, BMP, EPS, JPEG, PDF, PSD, and PNG.

Updates since the Technical Preview 2 Version

  • CAD geometry updates. When the original drawing changes, you can refresh your Impression drawing and retain many of your stylizations as well as any geometry that you've added.
  • Dashboard. The Layers palette, Style Editor, and Styles palette are now combined on a single, interactive palette.
  • Style Editor flyout panes. Style elements that make up each style can be edited on the properties flyout panes that are displayed when you move the cursor over the flyout arrows on the style tree. The location of these arrows changes, depending on the location of the palette.
  • Block and style scaling. Set Impression to adjust the overall scale of applied styles if a block or object is resized or if the view scale changes.
  • Block properties relocated. The Block properties drawer has been replaced by the Block
  • Properties dialog box. To access it, double-click a block in the Blocks palette.
  • Block and Styles palettes redesigned. Content on these palettes is now displayed on navigation panes instead of on tabs. You can create custom filters for blocks and styles based on their name or other properties. Block styles are listed as a separate set on the Styles palette.
  • Import of individual styles and blocks now available. From the Blocks and Styles palettes, you can open libraries that link to saved blocks or styles in other Impression files. You can save entire libraries or individual styles or blocks.
  • Automatic block style scaling. Blocks now retain the drawing scale of the view in which they were created. If they are inserted into an Impression view with a different drawing scale, the block styles are scaled proportionately, so that the relative appearance of the blocks remains the same.
  • Properties palette changes. Text properties have been moved from the Properties palette to a standalone Text Properties palette that is displayed automatically whenever you create text. Block properties are now displayed on the Properties palette.
  • Improved quality for imported objects. The visual fidelity for objects imported from DWG files has improved, particularly with regards to hidden line removal, text, and gradients. Additional view types, including 3D perspective, are now supported. Hatches, clipped objects, and wide polylines are also imported.
  • Area fill process enhanced. You can apply styles to areas more reliably, including dragging styles from the Styles palette to closed areas on the canvas.
  • Restore palettes to default settings. If you have modified the Impression interface, you can restore the original palette configuration by clicking Palettes menu > Reset Palettes. You must restart the application to see the changes.
  • Overall performance improved. Internal changes have improved the overall responsiveness of Impression as you work, especially when working with the drop shadow effect or overshoot property.

Check the system requirements and then give Autodesk Impression previously known as code name "Vespa" a try. It is a simple and fun application to communicate designs in a more conceptual, artistic, and personal style. If you would like to be more actively involved in the development of Autodesk Impression and work directly with the Impression Team, make sure to sign up for beta testing at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com

Lost a Best Friend Yesterday, Wyatt

My year and a half old 95 pound purebred yellow Labrador named Wyatt. He started having problems with his hips a few weeks ago then this weekend his spine compacted due to some possible hereditary problem we were unaware of. He was suffering in the veterinary hospital and the prognosis was bleak even after 2 surgeries costing a possible $5000.00 and would still be painful and no reasonably certain outcome due to the main problem being somewhere in his spine and shoulder joints spine, I had to make one of the most difficult decisions for my best friend, and so I decided to put him to sleep peacefully. I am really going to miss Wyatt.

Wyatt was the Labrador that spawned the idea of a Labrador dog mascot for the original Autodesk labs logo and icon.

Some photos of my friend.

Below is Wyatt in the hospital.

All I have left are great memories and remnants in the snow he ran through until it melts. He loved snow and we called him snow dog for this reason. Seeing his prints in the snow today was pretty difficult.

3D Digital Effects and Modeling - Tooting the 3D Horn

  and

I have been learning Autodesk Maya after being an Autodesk 3DStudio /3ds Max user since the DOS days. Both applications have a distinct niche of output, use and purpose but they are both way cool. I noticed an article "Movies 2.0: Digital Effects Magic Explained" that describes Hollywood special effects and mentioned Maya. and thought I would pass this on as well as few other articles. Of course we at Autodesk are both 2D and 3D focused and have many other products that create 3D content like Inventor, Revit and even AutoCAD but this post is on the non-design specific task 3D for movies, visualization and games.

Movies 2.0: Digital Effects Magic Explained

Game Developer's 3ds Max 9 Review

Cadalyst's First Look Review of 3ds Max 9 "Autodesk 3ds Max is a capable and powerful tool for 3D animation, rendering and modeling. Though targeted primarily at digital content creation for film and games, it remains popular for photorealistic rendering of architectural and product designs."

Desktop 3D Pulls Up Its Socks
"This 64-bit version of Maya 8 is the most capable and by far the most stable version yet. "

"This is the best version of Max yet. It's especially attractive for game designers, architects, and filmmakers doing pre-visualizations. If you already use Max and are investing in 64-bit hardware, the upgrade to Max 9 is a no-brainer."

"But for the time being, the 64-bit workflow represents the state of the art in desktop 3D. Multicore processors, lightning-fast graphics cards, and cheap memory coupled with the power and affordability of the 64-bit versions of 3D Studio Max 9 and Maya 8 herald a new era in which world-class 3D can be accomplished by The Rest of Us. Both programs are Highly Recommended."

CGSociety Review of 3ds Max
"Autodesk has chosen SIGGRAPH2006 to release new versions of both 3ds Max and Maya. The double announcement was made today at the Autodesk User Group Meeting at the opening day of SIGGRAPH2006 in a balmy Boston. With the merging of Alias and Autodesk earlier this year, this meeting has become the one place where 3D artists and animators have gathered to hear the best, latest and most spectacular news about their popular products. They were not disappointed."

Maya and 3ds Max Rank High in User Year-In-Review (Maya 8 at #4 and 3ds Max 9 at #8 and used in many of the game consoles and film studios like Disney Pixar, ILM (Industrial Light & Magic), Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft XBox in the rankings used the products.

Tippet Studios used Maya to create Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web
Weta Digital used Maya to create King Kong

AutoCAD Tip: Interference Checking

In AutoCAD when working in 3D you can check if there is an interference areas where 3D solids intersect, overlap, or occupy the same space or volume. For example you might use it to make sure the fireplace chimney does not interfere with the roof truss framing or that the piping is not going through the HVAC as that is not a good thing to find during construction.

Menu: 3D Operations » Interference Checking
Commandline: INTERFERE

You can use the INTERFERE command to check for interferences within a solid model by comparing two sets of objects or by checking all the solids against one another.

You can also use the INTERFERE command with blocks that contain 3D solids and with nested solids within blocks.

When you use the INTERFERE command, temporary solids are created and highlighted where solids intersect.

If you define a single selection set (one set of objects), INTERFERE checks all the solids in the set against one another. If you define two selection sets (two sets of objects), INTERFERE checks the solids in the first selection set against those in the second selection set.

Once you start checking for interferences, you can use the Interference Checking dialog box to cycle through and zoom to interference objects. You can also specify that the temporary interference objects that are created during interference checking are deleted when you close the dialog box.

Don't Quit Your Day Job to Start a CAD Blog?

Interesting post on CAD blogging: http://blog.novedge.com/2007/01/dont_quit_your_.html

I have always blogged for fun and spread information in a more efficient method than answering the same question over and over in a discussion groups. I dont think anyone in CAD blogging is planning on making a living from blogging anytime soon. There are no ads are ran here on this blog and it is done on my time and not an official job requirement. It is interesting that the article makes reference to the most popular CAD blogger but my stats and ranking are higher than Ralph's (there was a typo on Ralph's page views), sorry Ralph. I think my readers, stats and ranking is higher because I was the first proclaimed CAD blogger back in 2003 or maybe it was the people poking fun at me that raises my rankings. ;-)

Cheers,
Shaan

I Got Tagged, 5 Things You May Not Know About Me

I had seen this tagging going on for sometime and thought perhaps I might remain safe and untagged but Robin Capper from New Zealand tagged me today with the 5 [CAD] Things You Didn't Know About Me

  1. I still run AutoCAD 2.6 on my laptop for fun. My Unofficial AutoCAD History page
  2. I once wrote a virus by accident in ObjectARX a C++ customization language for AutoCAD. This was intended to be a funny example utility to create and insert custom AutoCAD linestypes. The linetypes were joke lines like a line made up of a string of beer bottles. The utility ended up migrating from drawing to drawing at a friends company. I no longer write ARX.
  3. I used AutoCAD back in the 90's to do the mechanical ASME design of a 40 passenger commercial self propelled and self contained submarine.
  4. I try to use every single Autodesk product.
  5. I originally wanted to be a marine biologist as a child.

I am now tagging en mass Lisa Crounse, Lynn Allen, Ursula Sadiq, Cory Mogk, Chris Yanchar, John Walker, James Wedding, Roopinder Tara, and Lee Ambrosius. :-)

9 Years... Time Flies

In about a week it will be my ninth year anniversary working at Autodesk. Since Autodesk is one of the rare companies and famous for allowing dogs at work, 9 years equals 63 dog years. Of course I was working with Autodesk long before that as a customer using Autodesk products, but January 19th, 1998 is what the HR papers say was my starting date.

Some said I would not last a week...

Cheers,
Shaan

PS: Some on the web reported/rumored the next AutoCAD box would be black, they are not correct.  :-)

AutoCAD Tip: Creating a New Layout

Creating a New Layout

Command Line: Layout > New
Menu: Insert > Layout > New Layout

1. Right-click the Model tab or any layout tab.
2. Click New Layout.
3. Click the layout tab for the newly created layout.

AUGI Seattle CAD Camp February 22nd 2007

http://www.cadcamp.com/

coffeecloud_rainbeerpizza = smile_regular

After running into many AUGI members, AUGI Board members, CAD Camp staff at Autodesk University 2006 and also being asked by members of the Puget Sound Autodesk Users Group to come back again, and I will. I will be presenting something fun and informative (just be up for some deep geek speak about CAD, Autodesk products, gadgets, and beta testing) at this years Seattle CAD Camp. I had a great time last year at the Seattle event and there were  many in attendance for such a new user group. I also love being back up in the Pacific Northwest as I lived in Portland Oregon for many years and enjoyed everything about the Northwest even the rain but mostly the people and the fishing.
