No trick as it is a Halloween treat! That's right this blogs 999th post since August 2003 is a new Autodesk Bonus Tool for AutoCAD 2007 and based products. Bonus Tools have been a long standing tradition of Autodesk developers to create cool tools. Suresh Kumar put together this new one named Drawing Tabs. This Bonus Tool is provided as-is with no support. If you like the idea of Bonus Tools perhaps we will provide more for you.

AutoCAD 2007 Rendering on Multi-Core CPU

Did you know the new mental ray renderer in AutoCAD 2007 will make use of multi-core CPUs or multi processors if present? If you have a multi-core or multi processor system you will notice that during rendering there are two render tiles which indicates each core or CPU is processing a different region of the image.

You can also change the order in which tiles are processed to even process in a spiral pattern using the Advanced Render Settings Palette.

Haunted Haystack Landing, Still a Hot Halloween Item 2 Years Later

Haystack Landing About two years ago I visited an old Victorian style house in Petaluma California that was rumored to be haunted to take some photos. Since posting about it on this blog each October the emails and visitor activity for the Haystack Landing information gets very busy. I have had hundreds of people from around the world contact me including paranormal researchers, movie companies, television networks, record labels, magazines, curious thrill seeking people wanting to check it out, and a few weird contacts I cannot really classify especially the person trying to explain the orbs of light phenomenon in the area of the house. The image has now appeared in magazines like Victorian Homes and on a music CD cover. It amazes me how much interest this blog post and subject has continued to grow.

Placing a String of Dimensions in AutoCAD

The following steps give an overview of semi-automating the placement of a string of dimensions with the Qdim command. This command only works for model space dimensioning.

1. Start the Qdim command.
2. Select the geometry to dimension using standard selection methods.

3. By default, a series of continuous dimensions is previewed. Right-click anywhere in the drawing to change the dimension types or options. Available options are: Continuous, Staggered, Baseline, Ordinate, Radius, Diameter, Datumpoint, Edit, and Settings.

4. Click to position the dimensions.

The dimensions are created.

Another Autodesk blog is Born: Off Course - On Target

http://waynehodgins.typepad.com/

Wayne is a learning, technology, and futurist at Autodesk in his position as Director of Worldwide Learning Solutions. Wayne has even posted a podcast to give readers some background on his blog. In addition to his well thought out post content I like the brain neuron image in his blog header and also the way he signs his post as that is unique.

Autodesk Impression now on Autodesk Labs

Sample1We just launched the public Preview 1 of Autodesk Impression (code named Vespa). For people located in England, United States, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia they can download Autodesk Impression preview now. Spread the word and go kick the tires.

http://labs.autodesk.com

Autodesk Impression works with DWG files, DWF files, output from other products and makes them look phenomenal. Revision to the design take only minutes to update the Vespa output instead starting over with markers or post editing of a postscript file in a photo editor. Take what used to be a several hour or many day process into about 20 minutes. You can assign styles to layers or blocks, convert hatches to styles, have a block insert replaced by another block randomly scaled and rotated to prevent that same tree copied look. It is just plain fun and effective.

Shaan

Autodesk 3ds Max 9 Now Shipping

Attend a Demo

Download a 3ds Max 9 30 Day Trial

Key New Features and Enhancements

64-bit Release for Windows
Autodesk 3ds Max 9 marks the first full release of 3ds Max with both 32-bit (Microsoft® Windows® operating system) and 64-bit (Windows) executables. The ability to address considerably more memory than in the past means you can handle larger and more-complex scenes.

Easily Render Realistic Scenes
mental ray® 3.5 rendering software adds powerful rendering functionality to 3ds Max 9. Create photorealistic skies based on the position of the sun with Physical Sun and Sky mental ray shader. New Architectural and Design shaders make it easier for designers and architects to create effects such as blurred reflections, frosted glass, and glossy car paint. The ability to create bump mapping on glossiness only and to simulate round corners and soft edges makes objects appear even more true to life.

mental ray 3.5 Core
mental ray 3.5 adds a simplified user interface for working with Final Gather. It also has a unified indirect lighting model that provides consistent results when switching between different 3ds Max radiosity modes.

Performance Optimizations
Core performance enhancements to 3ds Max 9 help maximize your productivity and accelerate your creative workflow. For example, enjoy greater viewport interactivity when working with dense meshes and switch between high-res and low-res bitmap proxies for better interaction.

Layered Animation
Placing animation into separate layers enables you to easily tweak dense and complex animations. Turn layers on or off to evaluate an animation. Blend new keys with existing motion. And allow for a full range of adjustments without having to modify the keyframes of the animated object.

Character Animation Workflow Improvements
Craft and refine your character animation more easily with numerous enhancements to Biped. For example, move keys past each other and work in negative frames. These capabilities save steps when tweaking a Biped animation and are particularly useful when trying to reverse an animation, since you can now negatively scale an animation range.

Pro Booleans
Pro Booleans is a new tool for modeling with Boolean operations. Quickly and easily model inorganic shapes—useful for prototyping geometry, creating game level layout designs, and building complex architectural elements. Merge, intersect, subtract, or add meshes to create rich and complex objects. Use the Pro Booleans tool to re-evaluate the topology and remove bad triangles, so you can create higher-quality meshes with fewer small edges and skinny triangles.

Hair and Cloth Improvements
Easily work with Cloth and Hair in 3ds Max 9. Create, manipulate, and style hair directly in the viewports using standard navigation and selection tools. Cinch waistlines, shorten hems, and tailor clothing in the stack without the need to edit the original pattern to make clothes fit.

Xref Object Enhancements
You can now reference scene geometry, materials, and controllers, and maintain dependencies between items that are externally referenced. The xref system’s new dependency handling enables you to preview object relationships in both merge and xref operations, providing more control over how external objects are used.

Enhanced FBX Support
The Autodesk® FBX® 3D authoring and interchange format enables you to exchange assets between 3D applications. FBX Enhancements include improvements to mesh compatibility and pixel accuracy when transferring assets and data between 3ds Max and Autodesk® Maya® software.

Display Support for DirectX and CG Shaders
Support for all shader types is now available via MaxScript, including HLSL and Cg shaders: enabling you to work with CgFX files alongside .fx files in the viewport. Shader display has also been optimized for improved performance.

Now in Northern California

I arrived Thursday night in San Rafael located about 15 minutes North of the Golden Gate bridge. I am visiting teams and friends while here and even attended a free lunch hosted by the AutoCAD Team. The hotel I am staying at is hosting the Miss California Beauty pageant so there are many beauty contestants overrunning the hotel. I even ran into fellow Autodesker Amy Fietkau of "Ask Amy" fame for Architectural Desktop. I head back home on Wednesday but have been posting photos to my Daily Grind III photo album.

I should have some exciting to post on the blog this week if all goes as planned.

Autodesk Posts Beta for New P&ID Product - AutoCAD P&ID (Codenamed Guinness)

This week Autodesk Plant Solutions posted a new product beta for creating, modifying, and managing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).  Geared specifically for those who work on P&IDs in the process manufacturing and power generation industries, the product is built on the familiar AutoCAD platform.  For plant designers, drafters, and engineers, features like dynamic lines, dynamic components, and industry standard symbol libraries make it fast and easy to create, manipulate, and update P&IDs.  Additionally, administrators can create symbols that are customized to their company or client standards.  For managing and reporting of engineering information, the Data Manager enables quick viewing and editing of underlying data with the ability to export to Microsoft Excel.

To test AutoCAD P&ID (Guinness) Beta 1, sign up at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com. Use the Beta Code "GuinnessB1" in your sign up.  If you are already a member of the MyFeedback portal, log in and select the User button to edit your profile and change your Beta Code to "GuinnessB1". Please ensure you use a business or personal non-free email account for participation. Gmail, hotmail, and other free email or anonymous email accounts will not be approved for most beta project participation.

You can also learn more about Autodesk Plant Solutions and AutoCAD P&ID at Autodesk University from November 28 to December 1 in Las Vegas.  Spread the word to others who might benefit from this new product and who wish to participate and provide feedback during pre-release beta testing.

I am in Kansas City for the CAD Midwest Technology Expo and Kansas City AutoCAD Users Group

Got my TabletPC Up on Windows Vista RC2

I rebuilt my HP TC4400 TabletPC with the Release Candidate 2 of Windows Vista the next Windows release from Microsoft still in testing  but expected to be shipping this fall. I also installed the Beta 2 of Microsoft Office 2007 and One Note 2007. Pretty sweet setup and it is actually running pretty fast and supporting Aero. I will be using this TabletPC while traveling this week to the CAD Midwest Technology Expo 2006 in Kansas City as well as bringing along my ThinkPad T60p laptop as my main machine. The Microsoft One Note on a TabletPC is one of the most organized and fastest ways to take notes and thoughts during a meeting. Windows Vista Ultimate version on a TabletPC seems to be even better than prior Windows XP TabletPC edition in the recognition of my less than perfect handwriting.

Final Windows Vista Release Candidate Available (RC2)

http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc2/en/download.htm

If you want to test the final beta release "Release Candidate 2" of the next Microsoft Windows operating System Vista here is your last chance. The public download should only be available for a few days. The download is an ISO image you must burn to a DVD.

I am running Windows Vista betas on a few machines including a TabletPC and really like it but I am always making sure to back up data so if things go bad I am not losing anything.

New AutoCAD Blog - CAD-e-Corner

I found a great new AutoCAD Blog by Ward Romberger thanks to RSS feeds I read I read Tracy Lincoln's heads up on the new blog TLConsulting.

New Firefox 2 Release Candidate Web Browser Released

The new version of the Firefox 2 web browser has just hit the web. Bear in mind this is still not the final version but a release candidate 2. There is support for Windows, Mac and Linux in many languages. The interface looks nice and I really like the spell checking.

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/all-rc.html

Release Notes:
http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0/releasenotes/

What's New
Visual Refresh: Firefox 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience. For instance, toolbar buttons now glow when you hover over them. We will continue to improve the look and feel throughout the release candidate process.

Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled.

Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines that the user may wish to install.

Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.

Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to resume their previous session after a system crash.

Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how to handle Web feeds (like this one), either subscribing to them via a Web service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options, but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.

Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like this one) without having to use a separate application.

Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can create a bookmark with a "Live Title". Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular websites.

Improved Add-ons manager: The new Add-ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes, combining them both in a single tool.

JavaScript 1.7: JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing several new features such as generators, iterators, array comprehensions, let expressions, and destructuring assignments. It also includes all the features of JavaScript 1.6.

Extended search plugin format: The Firefox search engine format now supports search engine plugins written in Sherlock and OpenSearch formats and allows search engines to provide search term suggestions.

Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.

Client-side session and persistent storage: New support for storing structured data on the client side, to enable better handling of online transactions and improved performance when dealing with large amounts of data, such as documents and mailboxes. This is based on the WHATWG specification for client-side session and persistent storage.

SVG text: Support for the svg:textpath specification enables SVG text to follow a curve or shape.

New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.

From My Daily Toolbox: Camtasia Studio

Many know I have used SnagIt and Camtasia from Techsmith for many years to record screen captures for documents or tutorials or to record videos. They are a great team producing great software that I use every day. I have even given some licenses of this great software away for contests. Why put something to text when you can can say a million words in a quick screen capture or video and make the point more clear. One hidden Camtasia gem, is the ability to create a animated GIF of your recorded video which can be viewed in any browser in discussion forums or emails.

Now Techsmith is posting 30 demos in 30 days showing tutorials of Camtasia features. These are great and worth a look if you use Camtasia. Hopefully the animated GIF production is highlighted in the 30 days of demos <hint>
Now the SnagIt team needs to do the same 30 day demo thing <hint hint>.

Autodesk University 2006, Connect!

If you are attending Autodesk University this year in Las Vegas you should check out this years AU Connect site as well as the AU Blog by Joseph Wurcher the person behind many of the things and classes that make AU awesome and the top CAD event.

Here is the AU Connect pin map of people with similar profiles as mine (yes I guess that makes me an official "pinhead"). This is a great way to find people at AU with similar interests and meet new people or geeks. when you sign up for AU Connect you are presented with a profile request which you enter your information in based on Personality, Profession, Software, and Skills. So far the most closet match to me is Kevin Sturmer of WPH Architecture in Portland Oregon. I don't know if this match is a good thing or bad thing for Kevin :-). Looking at Kevin's profile I see we do indeed have many things in common such as both of us having lived in Oregon, love fishing and camping and seem to both be geeks. On the personality level we match on Adaptive, Curious, Easygoing, Energetic, Fun, Humorous, Patient, Personable, Resourceful, and Responsible. Ok so I stretched it a bit on the Patient personality question.  I also see a good friend Kal Houhou from Lessard Group in Washington DC in the top 5 closest to my AU Connect profile. I will be setting up some get togethers using AU Connect.
