Check out the new Autodesk Labs  http://labs.autodesk.com

This is the new and in process public betas and R&D projects site we are using to get tools in the hands of Autodesk product customers and get feedback to help the tools and ideas mature. There are already 2 tools featured for download. We have some really exciting projects to launch there in the next few weeks so check back often. The lab in Autodesk Labs is a play on words as Autodesk is one of the few large companies that allows employees to take their dogs to work we came up with labs like Labrador retriever but also like a lab where we cook ideas up.

Today I am stopping by the Autodesk road show event hosted by Autodesk training center and Reseller Prosoft and being held in Salt Lake City Utah. I will be attending the AutoCAD 2007 presentation. My coworkers Lynn Allen, Nate Bartley and Heidi Hewett get the hard duty of attending the Hawaii AUGI CAD Camp. :-)

Autodesk Design Review 2007 Releases Today

Great Things Do Indeed Come in Small Packages
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060615/sfth004.html?.v=53

What is Autodesk Autodesk Design Review 2007 2007?
It is the renamed and new fangled version of the Autodesk DWF Composer. The beta held at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com has been going on for sometime and the oven timer just went of and it is done and ready for serving.

Autodesk Design Review 2007 has taken a great deal of customer requests and implemented them. There are so many nice enhancements but I will list a few that I really like.

Import AutoCAD® DWG™ and DXF™ files, including the latest 2007 format, directly into Design Review with full fidelity and accuracy. No longer do you have to convert your DWG files to DWF first before marking them up or viewing them. This is a big productivity improvement. You are also safe in knowing this is using trusted Autodesk DWG to not make you design do bad things on your customers screen.

* The ability to create a 2D and 3D DWF in the same file.

* 3D Cross Sectioning and also 3D Pull Apart. These are great features to see what's on the inside of a part or how to assemble.

* Disable Printing With the new Autodesk Inventor 11 DWF Extension you can lock your DWF to prevent printing.

* View and Print in in Black and White or Grayscale. Need I say more?

* Batch Printing of DWF files with a wizard or use scripts.

* Embed in Microsoft Office
Drag designs into Microsoft® Word, PowerPoint®, or Excel® programs.

And many more.

Autodesk Looking for High Standards Candidates

High CAD Standards as well as overall high standards of course. The AutoCAD team is  looking to hire (on an hourly contractual basis) folks that are familiar with CAD Standards (ANSI, National CAD Standards etc.) and have preferably authored a CAD Standards document for a mid-large size company (20+ designers/engineers).  We're looking for one person from the AEC industry and one from the Mechanical industry.

If you or someone you know fits this description and is interested, please send an email to abhi.singh@autodesk.com.

AutoCAD - Customer Error Reporting (CER)

Autodesk software products are known for their high quality. But even the best software contains software defects that may occasionally cause your system to close unexpectedly. When a software error occurs, Autodesk’s Customer Error Reporting (CER) makes it easy for you to send the details of the software error to Autodesk for analysis.

CER Workflow Diagram
This diagram provides an overview of how Customer Error Reporting works.
Click on the image for details.

How CER Works
The Customer Error Report dialog box appears whenever the Autodesk product you are using closes unexpectedly. If you choose to send an error report to Autodesk, the CER feature records the portion of program that was in use when the error occurred, the recent command history, and basic system information. In addition, you can include your e-mail address and a step-by-step description in the report. The customer error report is sent to Autodesk over a secure internet connection.

When Autodesk receives the error report, automated systems sort the reports so that Autodesk developers can review them. Reports are then analyzed and errors are prioritized based on their severity and the number of customers affected by a problem.

Once a software error is believed to be fixed, it is included in either a future maintenance update or the next release of the product. Autodesk also notifies those customers who initially reported the error and included their email address in the customer error report.

What Information Is Collected

  • Operating system name and version
  • Autodesk product name, version, and serial number
  • Graphics configuration driver name and version
  • List of applications loaded when an error occurs
  • List of recent Autodesk commands
  • Portion of Autodesk program in memory when an error occurs

In addition to the above information, you may choose to include the following optional information:

  • E-mail address: if provided by the customer in the Customer Error Report dialog box
  • Step-by-step description of the error: if provided by the customer in the Customer Error Report dialog box
  • Computer name: if enabled with the Deployment wizard or the CAD Manager Control utility

Much more functionality with CER reporting might be added in the future for some very nice things in addition to the current alert letting you know a service pack is available now for your AutoCAD that could fix your problem. For example we could let you know if a specific fix or solution is available for your error. So many possibilities so please send in those CER reports so we can research the issues you are experiencing and include any known steps or an email so we can contact you. In the end the main thing is that this makes the products much more stable and error proof and improves the product underlying code and performance.

Microsoft Windows Vista Beta Available

Microsoft has made publicly available a beta pre-release its next operating system Windows Vista which was formerly known as Longhorn. It as been in development for quite sometime and still is a ways from the final release. I like the features and the security and stability of this new operating system but please do not place a beta of a new operating system on your main machine. If you wish to beta test an operating system have a separate machine that of things go wrong you are not losing critical data. I have a separate test machine myself to keep tabs on Windows Vista progress.

Will Autodesk's AutoCAD support Windows Vista...you bet we will but only after it is released and tested and we are working with Microsoft. We support so many operating system with Autodesk products from Mac, Linux, to many flavors of Windows it amazes me of the developer braintrust on operating systems and coding languages.

Breaking News: Barbie Missing

…Just outside my home office door… I witnessed my 90 pound Labrador Retriever Wyatt running at full speed with a Barbie doll in his mouth. My daughter chasing after him yelling and closing in on him in the rescue attempt.

:-)

AutoCAD Tip: How to list all drawings that contain a specific Xref

This creative tip was from Mike Hacker of London England.

This is from the private Autodesk MyFeedback discussion forums. One AutoCAD MyFeedback member asked for a way to be able to find all drawings that contained a specific external reference Xref. Mike Hacker another MyFeedback member responded with a creative approach as a solution.

In Design Center there is an option to search.
You select the pull-down and choose Xref, type in the Xref name, it will then search all drawings in a designated folder to see where that file is Xref'd into.

Dc

Thank you Mike.

Anyone can sign up to be involved in Autodesk MyFeedback projects which can include usability testing, surveys, and beta testing opportunities for pre-release Autodesk products. Sign up at http://myfeedback.autodesk.com and make sure to complete the sign up with a non-free email and complete details.

Shaan

AutoCAD 2007 - Sharing visual styles

Check this out:

ID: TS1056445

You would like to know how to export visual styles to other machines.

Solution
To share visual styles between machines, you should add them to a Tool Palette, and then export the Palette as an *.xpg file.

Follow these steps:

  • Create or modify an existing visual style in Visual Styles Manager.
  • Drag the new visual style from the Visual Styles Manager to a Tool Palette.
  • Export the Tool Palette.
  • Copy the exported Tool Palette to the new machine.
  • The users accessing this exported Tool Palette can then apply the visual style to the current drawing by dragging it into the drawing area.
