Seasons Greetings

Autodesk will be closed for the annual week of rest and the holidays from the 23rd of December until the 1st of January.  I am on vacation trying to remain unplugged and offline as much as I can while maximizing play time in the snow with my family.

Have a very safe and joyous holiday season and a great new year.

Shaan's 3rd Annual Between the Lines Holiday Product Donation to Students

Do you know an outstanding student that is unable to afford AutoCAD or an Autodesk product and is deserving and will use it to continue their studies? It is that time again to donate some unused products to students that are nominated by someone such as their teacher. For 3 years now I have cleaned my shelves as well as asked fellow deskers that have unused Not for Resale copies of Autodesk products to give away in the holiday spirit. These are products myself or others had left over or are not using. Last year over 30 boxed products ranging from AutoCAD to Autodesk Inventor were donated. This is only for those that really need the product and really have no ability to purchase them. This is a small way to make a difference in someone’s life and perhaps get them started or a boost.

Currently I only have some boxes of AutoCAD 2006, AutoCAD LT 2006, AutoCAD LT 2005 Student Edition, Revit Structure (huge thank you to the Revit Structure Team), and more are coming. All are English language for North America or Europe, Not for Resale or Upgrade and must not be used for commercial use.  There is no warranty or support for these donated products. I hope to get some donations again this year from other Autodesk product teams and will be able to announce those as well. I know there is a mad scramble looking at peoples shelves right now globally at Autodesk offices for unused products.

Requirements: Please list your contact information including the email and phone number of the person you are nominating.

Sincerely,
Shaan Hurley

Kudos: AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT Team, Revit Structure Team. More to be mentioned as their team donates products.

Still catching up after AU

I have been traveling quite a bit in the recent 3 weeks and add a holiday and the week long Autodesk University in the middle, many beta projects, customer visits, presentations, and it all amounts to a large amount of email and task backlog. I have seen the Pacific ocean, Atlantic Ocean, the Florida everglades with gators, and the Gulf of Mexico all in 3 weeks. Weather and temperatures in my travels have been from 83 deg.F to 3 deg.F. I have quite a few submitted images from AU attendees still to post as well as annotate many existing images.

I should be caught up by next Monday, so if you have sent me photos from AU have no fear and accept my apologies as I am catching up as fast as I can.

Slow Plot dialog?

I received an email about a slow plot dialog box in AutoCAD 2006 and I emailed a possible solution from AU last week.

The most likely cause is a plot device is unreachable such as it is offline or not there. The delay should be only the first time you launch the Plot dialog and it checks your system devices. It could also be the PC3 files stored on a network and the networks latency causing the delay.

It turns out the person had a bad PC3 file so removing some PC3 files received from a consultant to a device they did not have solved the slow dialog and now it is speedy again. AutoCAD was following the PC3 file and not finding the device which caused a delay.

Take a blog survey from Autodesk

Autodesk is asking for people to take a quick and painless survey on the from page of Autodesk.com. Over the past few years since I kicked off on this blog habit the traffic has grown by leaps and bounds. There has been nice comments and some not nice ones but definitely a 999:1 ratio. Thousands of unique readers return each day by web browser or RSS readers and tens of thousands on some days like the recent AU 2005 image galleries. To me blogging has become an easy way to share and spread knowledge easily by anyone with no need for special tools.

If you want to get an idea at all the knowledge being shared by CAD bloggers just look at some of the helpful links on the left side menu or some listed below.

  • Local Live web maps from Microsoft

Microsoft has a beta website currently live. It is pretty nice although busy today on it's first day. In some locations it has a birds eye view available.

Video from AU Main Stage Presentation

Almost 5000 attended the main stage presentation last Tuesday at Autodesk University 2005. One portion was a live demonstration of how a project went from concept to final construction with the collaboration of many Autodesk products and disciplines including a stunning presentation video at the end. The final video for this fictional company that was building a new headquarters in New Zealand complete with their revolutionary helium filled bubble wrap manufacturing machines was shown on a high definition 20' x 80' screen and was something to see on such a nice large screen. There are some photos of the presentation in the AU 2005 Image Gallery.

    Au2

    Au3

Well here is a much smaller lower resolution version of the video that will run on your desktop as I am sure not many have a 20' x 80' high definition screen handy or the 5 computers required to drive that display.

Please do not direct link to the file.

Autodesk University 2005 class recordings and handouts

For those that attended AU this year (last week) in Orlando, you can now log onto the AU Connect site and view the 100 classes that were recorded and also download class handouts for most of the other 400 classes. You should have received an email or may get one any minute notifying you of your login and the content. It uses your personal AU Connect user account.

If you did not attend AU this year you may have to wait until they are made available free to AUGI like past AU content.

    Cheers,
    Shaan

10 million downloads of the free DWF Viewer!

For the 9 million download mark, I was tardy in keeping my eye on the number of Autodesk DWF Viewer downloads. I was able to stay on top of the 9 to 10 million transition, because it was the fastest million downloads we have ever had. The number of people downloading the free Autodesk DWF Viewer continues to grow due to the popularity and benefits of the DWF format over other electronic formats for CAD documents.

To put this in perspective, each of the following is roughly 10 million

    • Radios tuned to the first rock concert broadcast live coast to coast using what was then a brand new technology – microwaves (Todd Rundgren at the Roxy in 1978).
    • Blogs hosted on MSN Spaces.
    • “Do Not Call” registrations as of June 27, 2003. Imagine what it is today. I haven’t had a telemarketer call me in years.
    • Number of Java developers as of June 11, 2003. Imagine what it is today. Are there as many left?
    • Frequent Flyer miles required to earn a free trip into space from US AIR. Some blackout dates apply.
    • Miles between Earth and the Comet Hyakutake.
    • Meters of textiles produced by Viet Nam annually.

Note: A computer counting atoms at 10 million atoms a second would take 2 billion years to count one mole of atoms (Avogadro’s Number = 6.02×10^23). I think Intel is working on this now.

With the release of Autodesk DWF Viewer 6.5, more and more people are reaping the benefits of DWF. “As you reap, you shall sow.”

Everyone can get the AU discounts on training courseware

Autodesk Official Training Courseware was on display and for sale for the first time this year at AU.
The AOTC handouts advertised an AU special discount on the e-store for 20% off all AOTC titles.

If you didn't make it to AU and have been following along vicariously on the blog, you can still take advantage of this discount until Dec 15.  Just use Promo Code "AU2005" when buying courseware from the Autodesk Store www.autodesk.com/aotc.

Autodesk has grown the courseware this year, releasing 50 titles compared to only 30 last year.  Six titles came out just last week at AU.

    • AutoCAD 2006:  Designing and Managing Dynamic Blocks
    • AutoCAD 2006:  CAD Manager
    • AutoCAD 2006:  Plotting and Sheet Sets
    • AutoCAD 2006:  3D Drawing and Modeling
    • 3ds Max 8 Essentials
    • Civil 3D 2006: Residential Grading

    Rockin DWF!

I mentioned the MGM/Disney Studios theme park ride the "Rockin Roller Coaster" and that it was designed in AutoCAD by David Harrington.

    Au200511300598

If you attended AU 2005 you may have rode the ride but now you can see the DWF sheet of the huge guitar at the entrance where the strings run into the ride building and give the appearance of becoming roller coaster tracks.

    Download S5.dwf 2D DWF

    Download 3dmodel.dwf 3D DWF

    Download rockin3Dand2D.dwf Combined 2D & 3D DWF

To view a DWF file, download the free Autodesk DWF Viewer from http://www.autodesk.com/dwfviewer-download.

Good bye AU and Orlando, Hello Naples

I left Orlando this afternoon after Autodesk University ended and headed South for Naples Florida which is on the Gulf of Mexico and roughly 100 miles to the West of Miami. I did come up with some hopefully helpful tips on travel.

    1. Never try to navigate or provide directions to your boss when they are driving in Southern Florida in the dark. You could end up directing you and your boss into the everglades swamp, and that is just what I did. Simple mistake and no gators got us.

    2. When visiting an area that has recently been hit with a hurricane, never assume you can just find a hotel room available in the area. We eventually found a place but it took some time.

    3. One of my old tips but still a a good one. If you run out of toothpaste, try using Altoid mints and rubbing them in your mouth after chewing them. It will not be as effective as toothpaste but you will at least have fresh breath.

Day 4 of AU 2005 in Orlando- the final day

Last night was the Disney/MGM Studios party for Autodesk University 2005 attendees and what a night it was. I posted many photos from the evening in the AU 2005 image gallery. The park was open privately until 11PM with food and drinks and several of the rides open such as Tower of Terror and the Rock n Roll Roller Coaster which starts at 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds and has the large cool guitar which was designed in AutoCAD by David Harrington.

If you have some photos you would like me to place in the AU 2005 image gallery to share with the thousands of daily BTW readers, email me at shaan.hurley@autodesk.com. I will be updating the current photos and their descriptions over the next few days. The blog is experiencing a surge of thousands of unique visitors for the AU 2005 images sometimes thousands in only an hour.

Today is the final day of Autodesk University 2005. I am doing some work from my room while others are attending classes. Later in the afternoon I am traveling to Southern Florida in the Naples area then over to Miami Saturday.

I want to thank everyone who attended this years AU and hope to see you all at AU 2006 in the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas next year.Holding AU 2006 at the Venetian is fitting since it was designed using Autodesk's AutoCAD. I think all in all AU 2005 was a success although like any large event their were some things that could be improved and will be taken into consideration next year as AU just gets better every year. I made many new friends and met with many existing ones over the course of this week.

Please have a safe trip home from AU 2005.

    See you at AU 2006
    -Shaan
