Tutorial: Interoperability Between AutoCAD 2005 and Architectural Desktop 2005

Chris Yanchar has written a nice tutorial on the interoperability between AutoCAD 2005 and Architectural Desktop 2005 on his blog "Between the Walls".

"With the new ability for AutoCAD 2005 to natively read in ADT drawings, I thought a short tutorial about the advantages of collaborating with consultants with native ADT drawings versus exploding to 2D would be helpful. Also discussed is the basic interoperability between the ADT Project Navigator and the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager."

Intel's new 64-32 architecture compatible with AMD's

Information out on the web indicates the new upcoming Intel 32-64 bit chips expected in June will be compatible with the AMD 64. I sure hope this means only one version of the OS and not the current 2 versions of Windows XP 64 bit Edition.

AMD and Intel Harmonize on 64

Intel says its new 64-bit x86 extensions will run the same 64-bit operating systems and almost all the same 64-bit application software as AMD’s 64-bit architecture."

AutoCAD 2005 white Paper Benefits of Network Licensing

    Exerpt from the White Paper:
"Benefits of Network Licensing Network licensing is a powerful concept used by a broad array of workstation-based software products. The purpose of this white paper is to show how network licensing software can help you get the most from your software budget.

Network licensing helps ensure that your users have access to the right software at the right time and enables you to control the use of your software easily and efficiently. Effective use of network licensing software requires investment in planning, implementation, and maintenance. But, used properly, it can generate significant benefits for you and your organization.

Of course, all of the benefits discussed below are only available if you can get the network licensing software up and running during the installation of your software. With AutoCAD® 2005 software, we have introduced a new Network License Authorization utility. With this new utility and the Register Today software, CAD or IT managers can quickly and easily describe their license server configuration and company information and then submit that information electronically to Autodesk at any time and from anywhere in the world. This electronic transaction is then processed automatically (usually in a matter of minutes) and the license file is returned and placed on the license servers that the manager designated during the submittal process. The new utility works with both a direct connection over the Internet to Autodesk’s systems, and through email. We will continue to support phone requests, but this method will not be as automated as using the new utility."

AutoCAD® 2005 software contains over 25 “fit and finish” features. Derived predominantly from direct
customer feedback and requests, these features and usability improvements enhance many commonly used commands and processes.

There are many other features in AutoCAD 2005 but this is a nice list of some of the golden nuggets as a direct result of cusomter feedback, interviews, visits, beta test site feedback, and AutoCAD wish list items.

AutoCAD 2005 and the Section 508 Compliance White Paper

Working with AutoCAD 2005 and Section 508 Section 508 requires that federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities. The Center for Information Technology Accommodation (CITA), in the U.S. General Services Administration's Office of Governmentwide Policy, has been charged with the task of educating federal employees and building the infrastructure necessary to support Section 508 implementation.

With this white paper, Autodesk offers background information to help our customers understand the accessibility features of Autodesk’s AutoCAD® 2005 software, in the context of the Section 508 standards. This was done with the intent to enable agencies to be compliant with the Section 508 regulations.

The document contains subsets of the Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards as published in 36 CFR Part 1194 and provides an analysis of AutoCAD as compared to these standards. For the purposes of this paper, “AutoCAD” refers to AutoCAD 2005 and all Autodesk® industry products that are based upon the AutoCAD 2005 platform, including AutoCAD LT® 2005. More information on Section 508 can be found on the Government’s website located at: http://www.section508.gov/

Autodesk Is Now Shipping AutoCAD 2005

    Link to Press Release

AutoCAD 2005 is now shipping and the press release mentions the beta site customers we had from 37 countries.

"Over 1,200 beta customers around the world have tested and endorsed the newest AutoCAD software for its ability to help them better create, manage and share complex data and design information more easily. Added features to manage and publish sheet sets and communicate project information for markup and review also enable customers worldwide to improve their on-time, on-budget project delivery.
"We have already improved the speed and efficiency in organizing our project drawings by using the Sheet Set Manager feature in the newest version of AutoCAD," said Robert Pappas, project manager at Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, in Norfolk, VA. "By keeping all our drawings in one location and automating the title block, the Sheet Set Manager provides us with a consistent set of drawings that can be shared among our consultants through DWF."

I am now in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

I should be flying to Miami and then San Francisco later tonight. Brazil is a large and beautiful country and I want to come back soon. The people were so friendly and diverse. I have hundreds of photos to upload and will do so very soon. I have done all work and communication on my HP TC1100 Tablet PC with a wireless cellular data card which has worked superbly. I have to say the sunrise in Rio is absolutely amazing as I write this from the beach on the sand just about .5km north of the famous Copacabana. I have an AutoCAD customer visit in a few hours here and look forward to it.

Sunday and Monday from the Jungle

I will not be returning home early as my daughter who was in the hospital is now home and feeling better. I sure feel like I am a world away, well I guess I am. My 2 year old daughter thinks daddy is on the moon.

Thank you so very much for all of the emails and postss of concern for my daughter. She is now fine and was dehydrated from a bad case of the flu.

Sunday I spent most of the day either hiking through mud or on a boat. We went to see the birth place of the Amazon which is the meeting of the 2 rivers to make the Amazonas. I must have done at least 200 kilometers of boat travel that day and I don’t want any more boat rides.

I ended up at a local village for some lunch and fishing. For those that were wagering that I would be eaten by piranhas, you lost. I caught 2 species of piranha from a lake that is full of them. It was a lot of fun. I also ate piranha fried which was really quite delicious although not that much meat.

Monday started with a snake wanting to be closer to my room and I did not notice him until he noticed me. He was afraid and left quickly back into the jungle. I said goodbye to my jungle guide Antonio and my new friends I was hiking with from the Netherlands and Iran. I am now close to the city of Manaus Brazil in a hotel instead of the jungle. I need to take a shower and wash some clothes. Tomorrow I will be running around the city to see the market, opera house, aquarium and more places with my new friend and guide Antonio. Wednesday I head to Rio, then Thursday night back to Sao Paulo then back to the US.

I am currently uploading some photos to the Brazil 2004 Photo Gallery. I will begin annotating the photo over the course of the next few days but I have been so busy.

    Ciao,
    -Shaan

    20 March 2004

    Saturday from the Jungle

Well I may be headed home as soon as Monday to see my daughter who is in the hospital. Although she is doing somewhat better we do not yet know the cause and I really should be there now. That means cutting two days from Manaus and two days and a customer visit in Rio. What is difficult is getting the airlines to give me information or clear guidance on what my options are. I suppose in the worst case I can go on stand by flights and prepare for potential nights in various airports.

There is nothing odder to starting your Saturday than having to fend off two macaw parrots and a green amazon parrot who wanted my breakfast apparently more than I. I think we all settled this dispute amicably with splitting the rolls and papaya portions.

Today I went to an Amazon Indian village a ways up the river from here. It was a real exciting experience. I even got to eat some of their dinner from their fire (not chicken, and did not taste like chicken) and smoked a really weird cigar made from tree bark. Amazingly after the Amazon Indian cigar and excitement of the visit I fell asleep while still sitting up in the canoe like a zombie. I got many photos and trinkets from the visit. Some of the photos will have to be edited before posting because many Indians do not wear clothes on parts of their bodies. Unfortunately I could not buy any spare cigars from them to take with me. I did however get them to pull some strange faces when I let them look at their photos onscreen and then zoomed on to one of their faces in a photo. It must be pure torture for them to not get television, phone calls or email . For a brief moment I thought of showing them the power of the Tablet PC with a cell phone data card and signing them up for a free hotmail email account but I decided not to as they don’t have electricity to recharge the batteries of the Tablet PC. On the way out I could have swore they chanted “we love AutoCAD 2005”.

After getting back to camp we went for a three hour hike into the jungle. It started raining heavily after all this is the rain forest and not the sunshine forest. We learned quite a bit about the plants and trees including many used for medicine. We even found some trees which has sap that is extremely flammable. I even ate a pal grub worm after my guide said to eat it as it tastes like coconut. Well the grub did not taste like coconut but more like soap. I can at least mark that off of the list of things I wanted to do in my life. I took some photos of some huge bugs including a multi colored rhino beetle and a 4 inch long grasshopper. I figured I would have to get photos of these otherwise some may blame this on those Amazon Indian cigars.

Well I better go as I need rest as I have a trip to the main Amazon River in the morning as well as some piranha fishing and once again I will be taking my digital camera and my HP TC1100 Tablet PC with a cellular connection for documenting the days events. I have something that sounds like it is large on my roof and need to investigate.

I will post new photos most likely in the morning as the cellular data card is not that fast at uploading.

    Ciao,
    -Shaan

What a Day in the Amazon

My day started with a crazy cab ride to the Sao Paulo Airport for my four hour flight to Manaus Brazil. I arrived in Manaus at 1:30PM local time. By 2:00 PM I was on a boat with my Guide Antonio headed up the Rio Negro River. I barely had enough time once at the camp to brush my teeth and then it was off for some monkey spotting. After awhile of playing and feeding the monkeys and a nice rain shower it was time for dinner. I caught a beetle that was Large enough for a meal but I released it and ate some great food. To top off my first day in the Amazon jungle we went out and caught a caiman which is like an alligator. The noise of the Jungle at night is amazing with frogs, parrots, and monkeys all making noise as loud as they can.
I posted some photos in my Brazil 2004 Gallery.
Tomorrow I will be trekking into an Indian village which is about a two and a half hour hike.

The only bad news, is that I found out my 2 year old daughter is really sick and had to be admitted tonight to the hospital. I will call again in the morning and see how she is doing and if I need to head home early.

    Ciao
    -Shaan

    Now Traveling to The Amazon!

I am currently awaiting my four hour flight to Manaus in the heart of the Amazon jungle.
I will be posting more once I arrive at my camp on the Rio Negro River. At least I know that my wireless connections have been working from this Tablet PC. I do not think many have seen a Tablet PC here as I am getting some odd looks from people.

Another Brazil work day for me, but loving every minute of it

I have been in Sao Paulo Brazil for three days now and I love this city the food, the people, the caparinhas, and the warm tropical weather. I have been working while here in the Sao Paulo Autodesk office and on Friday I head to the Amazon for 5 days of fun in the jungle for some well needed rest and exploration. I have posted more photos from my trip in the Brazil Trip 2004 photo gallery. Tonight many people are going to the best churrascaria. There are quite a few AutoCAD users down here and many are extremely excited about AutoCAD 2005.

I am also doing all work and live postings from my HP Tablet PC. It is lightweight and powerful as well as it catches many peoples attention.

    Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo is a very busy and beautiful city but also very very large. To me, it even appears larger than New York. The shopping center here where I am located is one of the most modern and upscale I have ever seen. The food (and drink) is top notch and the people are very friendly yet Portuguese is a very difficult language to undestand.

This morning (now 7AM local -3GMT) I am going exploring then over to the local Autodesk office.

I Made it to Sao Paulo Brazil

Well I finally made it to the Hilton Morumbi Hotel in Sao Paulo Brazil. The trip started yesterday at 1PM PST and the first plane was cancelled due to mechanical issues. We ended up on a smaller Boeing 757 to Miami and then another flight to Sao Paulo. All in all it was a sixteen and a half hour flight. To make the most of my trip, I find out that the Brazil customs police are on strike turning a one hour customs and immigration process into four hours followed by a one hour cab ride. Need less to say I am tired and need a shower and coffee. I have some local CAD users stopping by the hotel in around an hour for some good chat. I have posted some images to the gallery on the left side of this blog with more to follow.

The Sheet Set Manager produces and stores copies automatically, providing a more dependable method for archiving project data.

    Benefit
Automatically archiving the sheet makes it easy to revisit project milestones. In addition, it ensures that you work with pertinent data and minimizes the chance for mistakes caused by storing multiple versions of drawing files."

Five Immunizations Today...All for the Amazon Jungle Trip

I had to get five immunizations and three prescriptions all because I am going to the Amazon jungle and may be exposed to not so fun things like Yellow Fever, Malaria, Cholera, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and a few more potential bacteria. I had to get a serious antibacterial prescription for tablets of Cipro to treat myself should I get a bad stomach bacterium, as I will be away from immediate conventional medical treatment except perhaps a local shaman.

I hate shots and my arms hurt.

I placed a photo of the painful needles in my daily grind photo gallery but sorry no pictures of my whining and acting like a 6 year old when getting the shots. I post random photos from time to time of my "daily grind".
